A song by an American artist from 1970s but probably known better as a cover by another artist. This version was written by him. Reply #6702. Jan 12 17, 11:16 PM |

Neil Diamond recorded "I Am a Believer", which he had written, in 1971. Before that, it had been recorded by The Monkeys... Reply #6703. Jan 13 17, 5:59 AM |

Neither of those - but both the writer/singer and the cover version are by male single artists - more obscure than Neil Reply #6705. Jan 13 17, 4:05 PM |

Does the cover version also date from the 70s? Is the cover artist also American? Reply #6706. Jan 14 17, 4:53 AM |

The original version would be considered sort of Bob Dylanish and the cover may be Jazzy. Found out a duo released a cover version in between the original and the cover previously mentioned. Reply #6708. Jan 14 17, 11:12 PM |

Leonard Cohen comes to mind - Bob Dylanish and died last year. But I don't know a song by LC that is better known in a cover version by somebody else... Reply #6710. Jan 15 17, 6:17 AM |

Not the late great Leonard - this guy is about 8 years younger, and American - more obscure. The cover was done a bloke about the same age as the original. The duet - one is deceased ... the singer. Reply #6711. Jan 15 17, 11:04 PM |

Leon Russell and his "A Song for You" fits the bill, except there are quite a few cover version of it, including Donny Hathaway and the Carpenters, but also Ray Charles, Amy Winehouse, Aretha Franklin to name just a few. Am I by any chance lucky? Reply #6712. Jan 16 17, 5:44 AM |

I am confused about "Rainbow in Your Eyes" - I think LR released it first, but then the song is also attributed to Al Jarreau, who released around the same time. Reply #6715. Jan 17 17, 1:35 AM |

So far I can't find any song that fits the bill, completely... A song written by and performed by Leon Russell, better known as performed by somebody else (male and about the same age as LR), plus also covered by a duo of which the singer is deceased. You didn't answer explicitly whether the cover version os also from the 70's. Actually I the original version is not necessarily from the 70s, you just said that it was by a 70s artist. Reply #6719. Leon did it in 1972 - the other artist did it in 1976 and the Carpenters did it in 1973 - to be honest I don't remember the Carpenters version but remember the other artists one has it was quite a hit. Reply #6720. Jan 17 17, 3:41 PM |
