Cool Hand Luke Trivia Questions

Answer: He ran away when he was suppose to be relieving himself behind a bush.

Luke told a boss that he was "caught short here", which meant he had to relieve himself. The boss told him to go behind the bush and keep shaking the bush. Luke tied a string to the bush and kept shaking it while running away. Boss Godfrey fired a couple rounds into the bush but Luke was gone again.

The captain seemed quite amazed by these awards. He'd never had a war hero in camp before. It was never mentioned why Luke was awarded these medals.

Answer: He thought it was a nice round number.

Luke looked like he was stuffed and unable to eat another egg. Only when Luke heard that every dollar in camp had been bet, did he continue eating. At the end of the hour, the inmates were not convinced that he had eaten the 50th egg. Dragline had to put his fingers into Luke's mouth, opening it up wide, to show that Luke had swallowed every bit of the last egg.

Dragline asked, "Hey KoKo who sent me a magazine"? KoKo responded, "Don't know, it's from Atlanta". The inmates went wild seeing Luke with two beautiful women, and wanted Dragline to show them the picture many times. When Luke was caught and brought back to the camp, he stated that the "picture's a phony," and that it cost him a week's pay to have it done.

Answer: He choked him.

Dragline brought the seriously wounded Luke out of the church and attacked Boss Godfrey, choking him and knocking off his signature reflecting sunglases.

Answer: Arletta

During the visit, Luke always called her Arletta, never Ma or Mom. Arletta was played by Jo Van Fleet. She went to see Luke because she was dying. This would be the last time she saw him. She traveled on a bed rigged up in the back of a pickup truck.

Luke got the spices from two young boys he met. This really got the dogs sneezing and the boys got big grins on their faces watching the antics of the dogs.

The captain was also amazed that he came out of the Army the same rank as he went in. While watching the movie it is easy to figure out that Luke is a non-conformist who has problems with authority.

Kennedy won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Dragline. Kennedy has also appeared in "The Sons of Katie Elder", "The Flight of the Phoenix", "The Dirty Dozen", "Airport", and the "Naked Gun" series. Strother Martin was the Captain, Richard Davalos played Blind Dick, and Dennis Hopper was Babalugats.

Answer: Rabbitt

"Hey Rabbitt, water-em down". We often saw Rabbit, who was played by Marc Cavell, walking around with the water bucket, or running to give Boss Godfrey his rifle. It is never mentioned why Rabbitt was the one responsible for these errands.

Answer: They are run over by the vehicle carrying Luke.

This is the first time that Boss Godfrey is shown without his sungalsses. The movie had many shots and angles of Boss Godfrey's sunglasses, which gave him a cold and ruthless appearance. They gave him an image which struck fear into the inmates.

Answer: A banjo

John was played by John Pearce and his son John Jr. was played by Eddie Rosson. The banjo was the one Luke sang his "Plastic Jesus" song with.

Answer: A doubled bladed ax.

The young boys also gave him the ax and Luke tied the loose chain halves to his legs by using the stripes that he ripped from his pantlegs.

Answer: George Kennedy- Best Supporting Actor

Dragline, a loudmouth bully and self appointed leader of the inmates, was by far George Kennedy's best role. Paul Newman was nominated for best actor in 1967 but lost to Rod Steiger, who won for his role in "In the Heat of the Night".

The Bosses told Luke to go down and fetch the snapping turtle. Luke used Blind Dick's cane to get the snapper. When the turtle latched on to the cane, Luke said, "Deader than hell Boss but won't let go."

Answer: tar and sand a road

Boss Paul, played by Luke Askew, told the gang, "This gang's been doing so good, the captain decided to give you something special. You got a whole road of tarring to do. And I wanna see you roll it." The new job for the gang was to follow a tar truck and throw sand on a newly tarred road.

Answer: It was over an hour away.

Although Luke's death is never shown, when the car pulled away and ran over Boss Godfrey's sunglasses, a red flashing light is then shown. It is here that the viewer can presume Luke died.

Dragline covered all bets on the egg eating contest. Dragline asked Luke why he picked 50 and Luke replied, "It sounded like a round number." (There happened to be 50 inmates at the camp.) This was the funniest scene in the movie.

Alibi was played by Ralph Waite, who later played Pa Walton on TV. Alibi thought he had bought a cushy job on his first day on the chain gang, but wound up spending a night in the box. Dragline was played by George Kennedy, Babalugats by Dennis Hopper (who would later co-star with Peter Fonda in "Easy Rider"), and Gambler was played by Wayne Rogers, who later played Trapper John on "MASH".

As the gang was digging in a ditch, a blonde woman walked out to her car with soap, sponge, a bucket and a hose. She then proceeded to wash her car, giving the inmates quite a show.

Dragline was bragging about Luke, but never saw him after Luke was placed in the car. The movie then replayed all the scenes with Luke smiling.

Dragline loved the photo and described it as, "A true vision of paradise itself, with two of the angels right there prancing around my boy."
