It takes place in the 1950's about a group of teenagers who attend Rydell High School. There are also two groups of popular kids. The girl's clique is called 'The Pink Ladies' and the guys's group is 'The T-Birds'. Danny leads 'The T-Birds' and Rizzo leads 'The Pink Ladies'. Sandy is the Australian girl who falls in love with Danny when on vacation in America. Her family decided to stay in America and she learns Danny attends her new school! Throughout the movie, all the friends are shown hanging together and Danny realizes he really has fallen in love with Sandy.

Frenchy is known for her love of all things beauty and cosmetics, and even drops out of high school to attend beauty school. Interestingly, the actress who played Frenchy, Didi Conn, was actually 27 years old at the time of filming, despite playing a high school student. She later reprised her role as Frenchy in the 2016 TV special Grease Live!

Cha Cha, the character from the movie Grease, is from St. Bernadette's school. Interestingly, the actress who played Cha Cha, Annette Charles, was actually a trained opera singer and had to learn how to lip-sync for her performance of "Born to Hand Jive" in the movie. Additionally, the dance sequence for "Born to Hand Jive" took three days to film and required over 500 extras.
