Ken Curtis, most famous for his portrayal of Festus Hagen in the TV series "Gunsmoke", has appeared alongside John Wayne in many films. He played the role of Charlie McCorry in "The Searchers" but was also featured in "The Fighting Kentuckian", "Rio Grande", "The Horse Soldiers" and "The Alamo".

This is said a couple of times during the movie. This is first said, during the Playfairs' visit to Sean Thornton's cottage. Elizabeth Playfair was played by Eileen Crowe. She was featured in another John Ford movie named "The Plough and the Stars". Barry Fitzgerald and Arthur Shields also had roles in this film.

Orvon Autry is actually cowboy and western star Gene Autry's given first and last name. John Ford cast his older brother Francis Ford as Dan Tobin. He played the white-bearded elderly man who refused to die before witnessing the big fist fight. Francis was a silent film actor and director. He played alongside John Wayne in "She Wore A Yellow Ribbon" as Connelly, the fort's bartender. Ironically he is present to see the big fight in this movie as well.

We do not see the foul ourselves. The race is split up between footage of the race along the beach and watching the judges view the race through their binoculars. John Wayne's children played small roles in this scene. Patrick Wayne is the most notable, from his later roles in his father's movies. They all are present at the race. This is not said in the movie, to the best of my knowledge. Not only did he star in "The Plough and the Stars" but he served as assistant director as well. In real life, he and his brother had reverse beliefs regarding Ireland and Britain. In this film, he plays the Protestant Reverend but was really a Republican. Of course, Barry Fitzgerald's character plays the Republican in this movie and we briefly hear him mention meeting to discuss treason against the crown.

Ward Bond played the role of Catholic Father Peter Lonergan. He worked alongside John Wayne in many other films including "The Searchers".

We first hear the name of the cottage when Sean stops along the bridge with Michaleen. Sean asks the name of it. He has never seen White O' Mornin' except as a baby. He only knows about it from the stories his mother would tell him in Pittsburgh.
