On their way to Los Angeles, Charlie rents a room in a hotel. He's not pleased to do it and he's only doing it because Raymond won't travel when it rains. Ironically, the Rain Man does not like the rain. In their defense, Raymond did not choose to be Rain Man and Charlie was just a baby when he came up with that name for his older brother.

While eating breakfast with Charlie in a restaurant, Raymond starts to get upset because the maple syrup and toothpicks aren't already on the table. When Charlie points out that the pancakes haven't arrived yet, Raymond says that if the maple syrup comes after the pancakes, it will definitely be too late. Raymond becomes quite agitated by this, and Charlie grabs him by the neck and tells him to calm down. Raymond really flips out and starts talking about a 'serious injury'. This is the scene where the toothpicks spill and Raymond shows his amazing ability to count them.

When Charlie turns on a faucet, Raymond has a traumatic flashback to the moment that ended up getting him sent to the institution. He screams, "Hot water burn baby!" repeatedly and tries to save Charlie from being burned. Charlie calms Raymond down, assures him that he is not burned, and then realizes this is why Raymond was sent to the institution.

When Charlie tries to calm him by suggesting they take a different airline, Raymond starts quoting statistics for crashes that each suggested carrier has had. Eventually it evolves that Qantas is the only airline that has never experienced a crash, but since it doesn't offer a flight from Cincinnati to L.A, this isn't very useful information. They have to drive across country.

Charlie remarks that when he was young, the "Rain Man" used to come and sing to him. It was only later that Charlie realized that "Rain Man" was the name he had given Raymond as a baby when he couldn't pronounce his name.

Raymond has to watch it every day. At one point, he and Charlie stop at a random woman's house in Oklahoma. At first Charlie tells her that he is from Nielsen TV ratings and that she has been selected to be a Nielsen family. She sees Raymond and and decides Charlie is lying and closes the door. Then, she hears Raymond and Charlie yelling, and she opens to door again and asks what is going on. Charlie confesses that he had been lying and that Raymond had to watch "The People's Court" or he'd throw a fit on her porch. She tells him that her family usually watches cartoon and asks if that's okay with Raymond. Raymond decides that it must be "The People's Court". She, being surprisingly generous to strangers, lets them in to watch "The People's Court".

Trapped in the Honeymoon Haven Hotel because Raymond won't drive in the rain, Charlie tries to keep his business together through phonecalls. Raymond is presented his required dinner of fish sticks, green lime jelly and orange soda. He is not happy though, because there are only four fish sticks on his plate when there should be eight. A frustrated Charlie solves this problem by cutting the four in half, making eight.

Charlie decides to use this ability to count cards at a casino in Las Vegas. It works brilliantly. Not only do they win lots of money, the casino's security can't figure out what is going on.

'I Saw Her Standing There', written by Lennon and McCartney, was the song that Raymond began singing.
