Answer: One Thousand Paces
At the German radar site, none of the squad members wanted to take the risk, but Captain Miller felt it was his duty to not leave the burden for the next squad that came along. In the raid, the squad lost their second member, T/4 medic Wade. There was only one surviving German, whom the squad abused liberally in their grief. After burying the dead soldiers, most of the squad wanted to execute the German P.O.W., but Upham convinced Miller to do the decent, humane thing to do, which was to let the P.O.W. go. They blindfolded him and told him to walk 1000 paces in the direction they pointed. Once he had done that, he was to turn himself into the next Allied patrol he came across.
