Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Tom Hanks portrayed which Army Ranger Captain?

Answer: Miller

Hanks did a great job of portraying Capt. Miller as an easy-going, hard-to-rile Ranger Captain, yet one who understood and accepted the seriousness of his position. He made it obvious that Captain Miller did not want to be there, but who also was determined to get the job done with minimal loss of life.
2. What was the name of the squad's sharpshooter (sniper) private?

Answer: Jackson

Played by Barry Pepper, Private Jackson was an excellent shot who considered himself a "fine instrument of warfare." He was cool-headed, and prayed often while engaged in battle.
3. What was the name of the soldier killed by a sniper while holding a little girl?

Answer: Caparzo

In the show, Caparzo disobeyed Captain Miller's orders when he took the little girl from her parents. He wanted to take her with them to a safer place, which is what the parents also wanted. Unfortunately, a sniper in the bell tower fatally wounded Caparzo with a single shot.
4. Actor Ted Danson ("Cheers") was in this movie.

Answer: True

Ted Danson had a short appearance as Captain Hamill. While walking with Captain Miller, he ended his appearance by saying (concerning Private Ryan), "No, I mean it. Find him. Get him home."
5. While addressing his staff about the issue of the Ryan brothers, Gen. George C. Marshall quoted a letter written by which former president?

Answer: Lincoln

This was a letter President Lincoln reportedly wrote to a mother who had lost five sons in the Civil War. General Marshall was now applying the principle of the letter to the situation involving Private Ryan.
6. According to Captain Miller, gripes go where?

Answer: Up, not down

Captain Miller was answering a question of what his gripes would be. He said that if he were going to gripe, it would be to his superior officer, and not to those under his command ("Gripes go up, not down").
7. The bridge where the squad finally found Private Ryan was in or near which town?

Answer: Ramelle

In the movie, this bridge was wanted by the Nazis so they could move heavy equipment over it. It was the Americans' job to hold the bridge or, if that became impossible, to destroy it so the Nazis could not use it.
8. Private Jackson was killed by what weapon?

Answer: A tank cannon

It was during the battle for the bridge at Rommel. Jackson and another soldier were in a bell tower firing at enemy troops when Jackson looked down and saw a tank taking aim at them. Seconds later, it fired, destroying the top of the bell tower.
9. The first Private Ryan located by the squad was the wrong one. What was his middle name?

Answer: Frederick

James Frederick Ryan's brothers turned out to still be at home in grammar school. It was then that Captain Miller realized he had the wrong Private Ryan. He was looking for James FRANCIS Ryan.
10. Where was the now-elderly Private James Ryan shown at the end of the movie?

Answer: Captain Miller's grave

After the war was over, Private Ryan went back to his own life. Finally, as an elderly man, he went to a war cemetery in France to pay his respects to Captain Miller, who... as he lay dying on the bridge at Ramelle... had said to James, "Earn this, Ryan." James wanted to be sure that, in his wife's opinion, he had lived a good life, thereby fulfilling Captain Miller's last words.

He is last shown in the movie standing in front of Capt. Miller's headstone.
