After Sollozo leaves the room, Vito Corleone says this quote to Sonny.

After Tom Hagen hears Woltz's refusal to include Johnny Fontane in his upcoming war movie and has dinner with him, he says "Thank you for the dinner and a very pleasant evening. Woltz later gets a severed horse head in his bed because of this decision (in filming this scene, a real horse head from a dog food factory was used). Johnny Fontane later sends the Godfather a huge flower arrangement in gratitude for getting the movie part. Two incidents in Frank Sinatra's career parallel Johnny Fontaine's character. The Don and Luca have to use force to get Johnny out of a contract at a night club. As the story goes, this happened to Frank Sinatra, through his ties to the Mafia. Johnny Fontaine wanted the part in the war movie, and got it with Corleone's help. Frank Sinatra campaigned to get the part in, "From Here to Eternity", and he may have gotten help through his Mafia connections.

After the assassination attempt on the Godfather, rival mobster Sollozzo kidnaps Tom Hagen to talk to him alone. He says to Tom, "I want you to help the Corleones, and I want you to help me." He wants Tom's help in getting the Corleone political protection for his drug business. After Tom says, "I'll do my best," Sollozzo says "Good. Now, you can go," and then adds this quote.

In the events leading up to this quote, the Godfather had given Luca Brasi an assignment to investigate rival mobster Sollozzo (Al Lettieri) with the instructions, "Go to the Tattaglias and ah, make them think that you're not too happy with our family and find out what you can." At Luca's meeting in Tattaglia's bar he is gruesomely killed (his arm is held, then his hand is pinned to the bar with an ice pick, then a third goon strangles him from behind). Later, a fish inside Luca's bulletproof vest is delivered to the Corleone compound, which Tessio brings inside. When Sonny (James Caan) unwraps the package he says, "What the hell is this?" and Clemenza replies with this quote.

In this scene Clemenza (Richard Castellano) has told driver Paulie Gatto (John Martino) to stop their car so he could relieve himself at the side of the road. While the car is stopped, Rocco Lampone (Tom Rosqui), sitting in the back seat, executes Paulie with a gunshot to the back of the head. As Clemenza and Rocco leave the car sitting there, Clemenza instructs Rocco to leave the gun but take the cannolis that he had purchased earlier for his wife.
