Two incidents in Frank Sinatra's career parallel Johnny Fontaine's character. The Don and Luca have to use force to get Johnny out of a contract at a night club. As the story goes, this happened to Frank Sinatra, through his ties to the Mafia. Johnny Fontaine wanted the part in the war movie, and got it with Corleone's help. Frank Sinatra campaigned to get the part in, "From Here to Eternity", and he may have gotten help through his Mafia connections.

When Tom Hagen is having dinner with Woltz at his mansion, Woltz explains why he won't give Johnny the part. Woltz groomed an actress for stardom with acting lessons, singing lessons, dancing lessons, and gave her anything she wanted. He was also sleeping with her. Johnny came along and stole her away from Woltz. Woltz felt completely humiliated.

Don Corleone says, "Why do I deserve such generosity?" The Don is telling Sollozzo that he is being generous asking for "only" a million but he is baiting and toying with Sollozzo, to find out what his share of the profits would be, and also getting him to share as much information as possible. The Don never had any intention of actually going into the narcotics business with Sollozzo.
