Answer: Tracy and Evie

Tracy Louise Freeland and Evie Zamora are the main characters in this movie. Tracy is a respectable young girl at the beginning of the movie who hangs out with normal friends and does her homework. Evie is a popular girl who does whatever she wants and looks hot doing it. Tracy idolizes Evie and desperately tries to be accepted by her. Eventually, Tracy becomes an even worse version of what Evie already is.

Answer: Mason

Tracy's older brother Mason is played by Brady Corbet. Even though he has some teenage rebellion issues of his own, he seems to be the more grounded of the two siblings. Tracy and Mason have a very embattled relationship. He openly dislikes Tracy's actions toward their mother.

Holly Hunter was nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of Melanie Freeland, Tracy's concerned mom and recovering alcoholic. Hunter won an Oscar in 1994 for Best Actress in "The Piano" (1993). Tracy has one brother named Mason Freeland. Mason goes to the same school as the girls, but is in a higher grade. He and his friends think Evie Zamora is the prettiest girl in school. At several points in the movie, Mason catches Tracy doing things she shouldn't. Although Evie and Tracy become close, and Evie lives with the Freelands, they are not related.

The scene where the young Tracy (played by Evan Rachel Wood) looks to her friend Evie for "advice" on how interact with Javy, provides real insight into the relationship between the two young girls. At one point it is hinted that Javier cheats on Tracy with her best friend Evie.

Nikki Reed and Catherine Hardwicke wrote the script for "Thirteen" in only six days. Reed was originally going to play the role of Tracy, which is based on herself, but ended up playing Tracy's bad influence, Evie Zamora, instead.

In the movie, Tracy is generally a parent's worst nightmare, and does almost everything a teenager could possibly do wrong. She steals many clothes and tons of money. She smokes both nicotine and illegal substances at several points throughout the movie. She lies about who she's going out with, what she's doing, and where she's going. Tracy never ends up in jail, although her own life seems to be holding her in.

The situations created by Tracy's wild behavior after becoming aquainted with Evie form the main plot of the film. Tracy's family, the Freelands, and their relationships with one another are highly strained by the young girl's actions.

First Tracy gets her tongue pierced by Evie. Evie says that now they can get even more piercings, so Tracy gets her belly button pierced in a shop when she is supposed to be researching at the library. When Tracy's mom sees her belly button, Tracy also shows her the tongue piercing.

Along with many other acts of teenage rebellion, Evie and Tracy go to a tattoo parlor to get Tracy's tongue pierced. While at the tattoo shop, Tracy steals a belly button ring and then Evie pierces Tracy's navel later on at home.

Although Melanie says Tracy has been wanting the game for months, Tracy acts uninterested because she is high. Tracy doesn't like Brady because he has been from halfway house to halfway house to recover from his drug addiction, and she is tired of her mom letting him into their house.

Birdie, played by Sarah Clarke, is apparently going through some rough times, so she comes to stay at the Freeland's home with her young daughter. This upsets Tracy and she makes rude comments to her mother about allowing Birdie to stay with them.

Nikki Reed (Evie) had a real tongue stud, but Evan Rachel Wood did not. The tongue stud was made as a suction cup to stick onto Evan's tongue, but it would occasionally fall off. Wood accidentally swallowed a few of them throughout filming. Tracy also gets her belly button pierced in the movie, but Evie pierces it while the two girls are on Tracy's bed. Evan has a scar from Nikki Reed actually poking a needle into her belly during the belly piercing scene of the movie.

At the beginning of the movie, Tracy reads a poem to her mother. Near the end of the movie, Tracy's teacher tells her she is going to be held back in the seventh grade. The teacher tells Tracy that her poem at the beginning of the year was one of the best she's ever read. Tracy never did the diorama she was supposed to, and there was never any mention of biographies or essays.

Brooke, played by Deborah Kara Unger, is the lackadaisical guardian of Evie and she pretty much lets her get away with anything. She is so disenchanted by her perception of her ward, she believes that all of Evie's problems are because of Tracy. In actuality, it is Evie who is the root of both of the girls' problems.

Tracy tries to tell Brooke and Mel that the stuff isn't hers, which it's not. Evie had hid all her stashes in Tracy's room so she wouldn't get caught with it. Tracy sees what's happened and blows up at Evie, which turns into a fight between the four women. Brooke and Evie storm out, and Tracy is crying. Mel tries to comfort her daughter and they both finally calm down.

This was the first feature film directed by Hardwicke. She also co-wrote the script with Nikki Reed, who stars in the film as Evie. Nikki Reed is quoted as saying she based the script on experiences from her own life.

Tracy calls her this because Brooke has had many plastic surgeries and looks like a monster. Brooke exposes Tracy's cut up arms to her mom when Tracy says this. Tracy is shown cutting her wrists a few times throughout the movie. Melanie is surprised to know that things had gotten that bad, but she defends her daughter anyway.

At the last scene of the movie, Tracy is spinning on a spin-wheel at the park, and she starts screaming. That's where the movie ends.
