Randolph Duke is obsessed with an article he reads in the "Science Journal" magazine regarding environment vs. heredity. He believes that environment is a far more powerful influence over human nature, however, his brother Mortimer disagrees and believes that heredity is the stronger influence. Hence the "famous bet!"

After escaping, they send the false report to the Duke Brothers, and go to New York City.

Louis and Billy buy their future contracts at the lower price from all the traders except the Duke Brothers, thus causing them heavy losses, as a result of which the Duke Brothers are very frustrated and disappointed.
