Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who directed 'Trading Places?'

Answer: John Landis

John Landis directed several films but is probably remembered most for directing the excellent film 'The Blues Brothers.'
2. Who played the character Louis Winthorpe III?

Answer: Dan Aykroyd

Eddie Murphy played the other main character in the film, Billy Ray Valentine. Paul Gleason took the role of Clarence Beeks and Frank Oz played a cameo role of a policeman in the film.
3. At the start of the film, what company did Louis work for?

Answer: Duke and Duke

The firm Duke and Duke was owned by the Duke brothers, Randolph and Mortimer. Louis was one of their top commodity brokers.
4. The partners of the firm Louis worked for had a wager concerning both Louis and Billy Ray. What was the value of this wager?

Answer: $1

The Duke brothers had a wager between themselves. They wanted to see what happened if they reduced upper class employee Louis to living in the gutter and elevated the status of working class Billy Ray. Would their background and upbringing hold firm or would they adapt to their new surroundings and social levels?
5. Why was Louis fired from his job?

Answer: He was caught stealing money

Clarence Beeks, who was an employee of the two brothers purposely framed Louis for the theft so he would lose his job and the respect of his colleagues. This was the start for him on the downward slope to losing everything.
6. What was the name of Louis' fiancée at the beginning of the movie?

Answer: Penelope Witherspoon

She did try to stand by him when he was sacked from Duke and Duke and even went to meet him from jail. It was only when a lady of the night approached Louis outside the police station asking him for drugs that Penelope finally had enough. Little did she know that it was all part of the Dukes' plan!
7. Who played the down-and-out Billy Ray Valentine?

Answer: Eddie Murphy

We first see Billy Ray begging on the streets masquerading as a legless blind Vietnam war veteran. Richard Pryor was originally considered for the role of Billy Ray before they decided upon Eddie Murphy.
8. What is the name of the lady of the night (played by Jamie Lee Curtis) who takes pity on Louis then decides to help him when he has had all of his assets frozen and cannot get into his own home?

Answer: Ophelia

Ophelia had brains and talent but had decided to be a lady of the night as if she carried on working for a further five years she could retire on the profits! She realised Louis was telling the truth about his upbringing when she saw that his fingernails were manicured!
9. When he is at his lowest, Louis goes to his ex-employers dressed as Santa Claus. He hides some food in his beard when he is there for him to eat later on. What type of food was it?

Answer: Piece of fish

We later see him sitting on the bus and pulling the fish out of his beard, pulling all the white hairs that had stuck to the fish off and then eating it! Eugh! The fish was actually nova lox, which is a type of Scottish salmon.
10. The brothers had asked Clarence Beeks to get them a report earlier than anyone else so they could corner the commodities market and see the money roll in. What was the full name of this report?

Answer: Crop Report

To get hold of the crop report before anyone else would earn the Dukes brothers millions. They didn't really care it was against the law (an illegal act called 'insider trading') as long as they made money!
11. Did Louis and Billy Ray manage to get the report off Clarence Beeks before he delivered it to the brothers?

Answer: Yes

They also replaced the crop report with the wrong information to lead the Duke brothers astray!
12. Did the brothers lose all their money before the end of the movie?

Answer: Yes

Louis and Billy Ray cleaned up on the commodities market and made a fortune. The Duke brothers (armed with an incorrect crop report) lost all their money and then some. They owed millions at the end of the day and were destined to be on the streets themselves. A good comeuppance for them as they had lowered Louis to that status purely for their entertainment!
13. Did Louis get a girlfriend before the end of the movie?

Answer: Yes

After everything they had been through together, Louis and Ophelia lived in luxury on the profits they earned from the day they cleaned the brothers out.
14. Did that character Jamie Lee Curtis played return to the streets as a 'lady of the night?'

Answer: No

With the money she invested on the stock market she had more than enough to retire on and enjoy herself!
15. What happened to Clarence Beeks?

Answer: He was propositioned by a gorilla

After Louis and Billy Ray had taped his mouth and put him in a gorilla costume on the train, he ended up in a cage with a real gorilla! When the train came to a stop, you heard the man offloading saying that he thought the two gorillas were different sexes and that they should be left to enjoy themselves! It is worth seeing this movie just to see Beeks' eyes at the end! Hope you enjoyed this quiz and I hope it bought back some fond memories!
