As the movie neared its end, the two were performing the song on stage. Johnny stopped and explained to the audience that he couldn't sing the song anymore unless June agreed to marry him. Through tears, she managed an "all right." The scene faded out back to Johnny's home where it seems he finally patched things up with his father. Soon after, the credits rolled.

The film opened at Folsom prison, before flashing back to Cash's childhood. It eventually went full circle, catching up with itself back at the prison, where Johnny Cash sang "Cocaine Blues" to the inmates of Folsom Prison, and sympathized with them over their drinking water!

After the Texarkana concert, we see Johnny and June in a small cafe as they talk to each other. They get into a conversation about her singing, and she says that Anita 'has the pipes' in the family and that comedy is what she is good at. Perkins was greatly respected as a singer, songwriter, and guitar player, but his recording career was less successful than some of the others. Personal problems also led to him joining The Johnny Cash Show. They were close as brothers. Cash recorded Perkins'composition, "Daddy Sang Bass".

After the brief conversation with the warden, Johnny took the stage in front of the Folsom inmates. He discussed his run-ins with the law and how he tipped his hat off to the Folsom inmates for having to drink the yellowish dirty water. Soon after, he began singing.

On their first tour, after Johnny recovers from his drug addiction, they are travelling on a bus and at around 2 a.m. Johnny decides to wake June up and propose. June is clearly not happy and tells him never to propose to a woman on a bus and to never say it was because of a bad dream, as that is the excuse he uses for waking her up.

Johnny Cash was arrested seven times. This gave him credibility with the prisoners. Each was an one night stand. The first was for public drunkenness. Most were after he was found drunk and high. He got put in with the other drunks to sleep it off. He credited his last arrest, and the sheriff, with helping him get straight. This 1965 arrest was his sixth. He had crossed the border to get some pills. The cab driver he used got them from a heroin dealer. This got the police's attention. Since he'd still gotten the pills illegally, they had to book him. He and Vivian were estranged at the time, but she still accompanied him to the sentencing hearing. A picture taken at the time made her appear to be African American. She was actually of Mediterrean descent. This attack outraged Cash. It was partially because it involved his children. A KKK group had printed handbills. There was a lawsuit. This mess supposedly led him to June's arms. Note: he had a very good record on race relations.

Reese, who had never thought she would have to sing or play her own instruments, was paranoid. She called her attorney, agent, and manager to see about having LeAnn Rhimes audition for the role. In the end, Joaquin and Reese did sing their own songs and play their own instruments. The movie soundtrack actually used their real singing talents.
