First Alice goes for the bureau drawer, then the oven, and finally decides on hiding it under the icebox. Unfortunately, Ralph chooses the same place to hide Alice's gift. Alice comes in from the bedroom and catches Ralph just as he is putting the drip pan back under the icebox. He admits hiding her gift, and Alice admits his is there as well. He asks what his gift is, but Alice insists he wait until Christmas morning to find out, and decides to move Ralph's gift to the closet shelf behind a hatbox.

Gleason felt that rehearsals destroyed the 'spontaneity' possible during the live performance. The most he would agree to do (though not always) was to show up for the 'blocking' (where each character was to stand when delivering his or her lines), but NEVER for a rehearsal. Audrey Meadows and Art Carney would take the terrified guest star to their dressing room and have their own rehearsal, and impart these words of wisdom '...just keep out of his way and never, ever, stand in front of him.'

Norton carried his reading glasses in his vest pocket, and would sometimes put them on to read. The large circular frames always made the audience laugh, and never failed to irk Ralph.

As Gleason said this, he would turn Audrey Meadows in a dramatic gesture, embrace and give her an assumed kiss on the lips which was always obscured by his back and shoulder, just as the cameras would fade to black. Ironically, due to the fervor of the moment and of being on live TV, as well as Gleason's poor aim, the kiss rarely landed where it was supposed to. In the episode 'Twas The Night Before Christmas' (originally aired on December 24, 1955), in a rare occurrence, the cameras continued to roll after the kiss, at which time Gleason turned to face the audience once again, noticeably wiping his mouth several times with his hand! This occurrence, in which the 'Kramdens' and 'Nortons' break character to wish the home and studio audiences a Merry Christmas, is sometimes included when broadcast on Christmas Eve, and appears in the DVD version of the episode.

This is where Audrey Meadow's nickname 'The Rock' came about. A firm believer in rehearsals, it took Meadows quite a while to get used to Gleason's no-rehearsal policy.
