Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The origin of the word 'ferret' is the Latin word 'furritus' which means which of the following things in English?

Answer: Little thief

If you have a ferret as a pet, you probably already know that nothing is safe around a ferret. They will eat almost anything, as well as steal and hide almost anything. This is why their name in Latin means 'little thief". Ferrets have been domesticated for centuries and have been used to hunt rabbits, mice and rats.
2. In which continent would you be most likely to see a fennec fox in the wild?

Answer: Africa

The fennec fox is the smallest of all the worlds foxes, measuring around six inches (15 centimeters). It is noted for its very large ears, which are used to radiate body heat and help keep the animal cool in its desert habitat. Found in the Sahara Desert of Northern Africa, as well as the Arabian Peninsula, the fennec fox is an adaptable and opportunistic feeder.

They live in underground dens during the day and come out at night to find food.
3. The fossa is one of the most unique mammals in the world and is known for mating in which of the following unusual ways?

Answer: On horizontal tree branches

The carnivorous fossa leads a somewhat arboreal lifestyle and are known to mate on horizontal tree branches, where they will balance for hours at a time while engaged in procreation. Found only on the island of Madagascar, the fossa appears to be related to both cats and civets.

They are able to climb up and down trees headfirst and jump from tree to tree. It is the largest endemic carnivore on the island.
4. What is the proper term for a male fur seal?

Answer: Bull

A male fur seal is called a bull and the female is a cow. Northern seals are larger than seals found below the equator, but the populations are smaller. All seals are at home in the water, live approx. ten years in the wild and have a carnivorous diet. During the breeding season, bulls gather themselves a large harem of 30 or more cows that they mate with exclusively.
5. This unusual wild cat, known to live near water is known by which of the following names?

Answer: Fishing cat

Found in the southeastern areas of Asia, the fishing cat lives near rivers, streams and swamps. They love to dine on fish, frogs, eggs, ducks, and snails. They have even been known to attack and kill calves and dogs. They use their short legs and webbed paws to swim easily in the water. Their beautiful coats are a combination of stripes and spots.
6. Look at the options and then decide what the scientific name for the unusual chousingha, or four horned antelope, is.

Answer: Tetracerus quadricornis

The four horned antelope, found in areas of Nepal and India, is the only bovid on the planet that has four permanent horns. They are solitary in nature, herbivorous, and not prone to roaming. They are very shy and try their best to avoid human interaction at any level. Loss of habitat is a big threat to this unique creature. The other three options are all sharks.
7. What is the proper term for the membrane that runs from the ankle to the wrist than enables a flying squirrel to glide through the air?

Answer: Patagium

The patagium is the parachute-like membrane that is found on flying squirrels, flying foxes and colugos. These arboreal mammals do not actually fly, but glide instead. Nocturnal activity is common among flying squirrels. Their omnivorous diet includes spiders, slugs, seeds, tree sap, and fungus.
8. The fringe-eared oryx lives on the shores of the Nile River and are known to drink 25 gallons of water a day.

Answer: False

The fringe-eared oryx is found in Tanzania and Kenya where they graze semi-arid grasslands. They get much of their water from the grass that they eat and have been known to go as long as a month without drinking. This beautiful animal lives in nomadic herds and are prey to some of Africa's big cats. This animal is sometimes referred to as a 'beisa'.
9. The fin whale is the second largest animal on our planet.

Answer: True

The only animal larger than the fin whale is the blue whale. The fin whale is longer and sleeker than the blue whale making it quite a bit faster. These baleen whales are found in all the major oceans on the planet and are known to travel in pairs. Fin whales are one of the more social baleen whales and have been observed to travel in groups of over 80 whales. Fin whales are known to produce as many as six calves at one time, even though single births are more common.
10. What is the name of this lovely spotted deer that is endemic to western Eurasia?

Answer: Fallow deer

Fallow deer are one of the few types of deer that do not lose their spots as they reach adulthood. Males are much bigger than females and display a large rack of antlers. There are quite a few varieties of fallow deer and depending on where they live, there are some variations in appearance. These animals are grazers who feed mostly on grass and occasionally on tree bark.
