If you love nature, Alaska should be in your bucket list. I suggest going in summer, as some places are inaccessible in the winter, while others may be closed due to the weather.

Answer: Tongass Forest

The Tongass Forest is the largest forest located in the United States. One of the many things that can be seen here is the Etolin Canoe. Located on the island of Etolin, the Etolin Canoe is an unfinished dugout canoe that was started somewhere between 1880-1920.

Although it is located in Alaska, Tongass National Forest includes the greatest tracts of temperate rainforest located outside of tropical areas. Conversely, this magnificent wilderness is also home to hundreds of glaciers!
2. Near which of these Alaskan cities would you visit if you wanted to see the end of the Iditarod and visit the location known as the "Last Train to Nowhere"?

Answer: Nome

Located on the Seward Peninsula, Nome, Alaska is a lovely town to visit. At one time, Nome was one of the largest cities in Alaska, but by the turn of the 21st century less than 4,000 people resided there. Only 70 miles away from Nome, which is considered very close, is the ghost town of Solomon and the unique location known as the "Last Train to Nowhere".

In the middle of the frigid tundra are two derelict steam engines and a rolling stock which were abandoned in 1907 when railroad construction stopped unexpectedly.

This area is a wonderful location for bird watching as well as for fishing. Nome is also the end location for the great Iditarod dogsled race.
3. Both of the largest bears in the world live in Alaska. One is the Polar bear, what is the other?

Answer: Kodiak bear

Alaska is home to both the Polar bear and the Kodiak bear. The Kodiak bear has fur very similar to the Grizzly bear, its very close cousin. Males in prime condition can weigh in at 1500 lbs. (680 kg). This bear is found on the Kodiak archipelago in the southwestern area of Alaska.

A visit to Kodiak Island, the largest island in the archipelago, will enable a visitor to see a wild menagerie of fox, otter, deer, elk, reindeer, and multiple bird species.
4. A trip to Alaska will enable you to see Mount McKinley also known by which of the following names?

Answer: Denali

Mount McKinley, the tallest mountain in North America, is located in the Denali National Park. Denali is the name given to the mountain by the Koyukon Athabaskan peoples who live in the area. Denali National Park is six million acres of solitude and tranquility.

The park is bisected by one road, with no fences and very few signs of mankind. No matter which name you choose, a trip to Denali is a glimpse into paradise.
5. Which mighty river is the longest waterway in the state of Alaska?

Answer: Yukon River

Although the Yukon River originates in British Columbia, Canada, it is the longest river in Alaska. It has been used as one of the main methods of transportation of people and products for centuries. One of the world's largest salmon runs takes place yearly in the Yukon River.

Despite an overall length of 1,980 miles (3,190km) there are only four vehicle-carrying bridges that span over this magnificent waterway. Canoeing this beautiful river can be one of the greatest stress relievers the state has to offer.

The other three options are major rivers of Canada.
6. The state of Alaska only has approximately 100 named glaciers and 50 unnamed glaciers.

Answer: False

The number of glaciers in Alaska is not known for sure, and estimates do vary. Many websites, books, and television programs give estimates of 100,000 glaciers. In 2015, there were 616 official named glaciers in Alaska and many of them can be visited by the intrepid tourist.

The number of glaciers is constantly changing and can be a matter of definition. There is no doubt that there are many, many more glaciers than 150. This provides you with a huge number of choices of which one to go to.

Answer: A brightly colored cemetery

A daytrip to see the Eklutna Village Historical Park will allow you to see the unusual Eklutna Village cemetery. This area of Alaska has a high population of Orthodox Christians from Russia. The cemetery has brightly colored burial spirit boxes that look somewhat like birdhouses.

Answer: Speed climbing

The Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show is one of the most popular cultural events in Alaska. It is held near the boat docks and is a common point for Alaskan cruise ships to stop for a visit. When the lumberjacks are in battle, you can hear the audience cheering all through town.

This hour long show features speed-climbing, sawing competitions, log rolling, and wood chopping. These are all activities that real loggers had to engage in before the advent of the chain saw. There are three to four shows daily, depending on how many cruise ships are in dock.

This show is a true reflection of the proud past of the Alaskan lumberjack.
9. The unique Baranov Museum, located in the city of Anchorage, is the largest science museum in the state of Alaska.

Answer: False

The Baranov Museum is located in the town of Kodiak and was built in 1793 when Alaska was still part of Russia. It is a historical museum that was used in the past by both Russian and American trading companies. It is home to a large collection of Native American objects as well as historical trade goods, textiles, and household objects. On display are objects such as seal-skin currency and an iron bust of Tsar Alexander I dating from 1804.

When visiting the island of Kodiak, this unassuming frame structure is a must-see.
10. Which of these colors is least likely to be seen when the northern lights are glowing in the sky?

Answer: Red

The northern lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, is thought to be caused by radiation that is emitted as light. When high energy particles from the sun collide with the Earth's magnetic field, these magnificent displays of color and light are created.

The kind of atom involved in the process determines the color. The lights are usually green, yellow or orange. The best time to see these lights is between December to March when the skies are the darkest. The farther north you visit, the better the view of the northern lights. No trip to Alaska would be complete without seeing Mother Nature's art work.
