Bridges Trivia Questions

1. Commonly known as the "Chain Bridge", it was the first permanent bridge built across the Danube in what country?

From Quiz
Chain Reaction

Answer: Hungary

The Széchenyi Chain Bridge spans the Danube River between Buda and Pest in Hungary. It was designed by English engineer William Tierney Clark and built by Scottish engineer Adam Clark and was opened in 1849. It has the name of István Széchenyi who was a major supporter of its construction attached to it but is most commonly known as the "Chain Bridge". There are lion statues at the abutments that were sculpted in stone by sculptor János Marschalkó that are similar in design to the lions of Trafalgar Square in London, England. During World War II the bridge was blown up by the Germans, leaving only the towers behind. The bridge was rebuilt in 1949. The bridge has been featured in a K-pop video and the Katy Perry video "Firework".

2. The Golden Gate Bridge is arguably one of the most beautiful and certainly one of the most photographed in the world. After what is it named?

From Quiz Golden Gate, Golden State

Answer: The strait between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean

The Golden Gate is a strait on the US West Coast that connects San Francisco Bay to the Pacific Ocean. On either side are the headlands of the San Francisco Peninsula and the Marin Peninsula. The whole shoreline with commensurate waters in the bay and bounded by the strait are managed by the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. It seems incredible that early explorers missed the entrance to one of the US busiest ports precincts but the foggy area and the dangerous boiling waters of the strait may have made this a daunting process. The Golden Gate Park is also named after the Strait not the bridge and indeed precedes the bridge by 56 years.

3. Which striking bridge over saltwater in the U.S. is always near the top of worldwide sites for suicide?

From Quiz Bridges of Sighs

Answer: Golden Gate, San Francisco

The gorgeous Golden Gate Bridge, bright orange against the green hills of Marin County, the blue waters and the white buildings of San Francisco, is apparently an attractive location for those wanting to end their lives. People from all over the U.S. and world have traveled to San Francisco just to jump from this bridge at the edge of a continent. About 5% survive the fall from 245 feet (75 meters), but many of those then drown or die of hypothermia; amazingly, a few people survive each year to be picked up by U.S. Coast Guard Station Golden Gate at the foot of the bridge.

4. Which fallen bridge was given the nickname "Galloping Gertie"?

From Quiz Water over Troubled Bridge

Answer: Tacoma Narrows Bridge

The original Tacoma Narrows Bridge, which was located in Washington State, was opened to traffic on July 1, 1940. The bridge had a serious design flaw that caused the roadway to sway violently during high winds. Because of this, the bridge was given the nickname "Galloping Gertie". The bridge would eventually collapse on November 7, 1940. Except for one motorist's dog, there were no casualties. A new bridge was completed on October 14, 1950.

5. Where were the earliest recorded crossings of the river Thames located?

From Quiz Thames Bridges

Answer: Staines and London Bridge

A lot of the current bridges were at the same location as many of the earlier sites. The Staines and London Bridge crossings were first in use during Roman times. The expansion of Kingston is reputedly due to Staines Bridge bringing trade from early in the 18th century, when it was the nearest crossing apart from London Bridge. The original London Bridge was sold to an American tycoon and rebuilt in the USA. The current bridge is in the same location as the old one.

6. As we travel West up the Thames Estuary from the North Sea, the first bridge crossing the Thames we go under has a regal name. What is it?

From Quiz "Come Together" - Bridging the North/South Divide

Answer: Queen Elizabeth II Bridge

The Queen Elizabeth II Bridge is part of the Dartford toll crossing of the River Thames, with Thurrock on the north side and Dartford on the south. The bridge was opened in 1991 and was built to carry the increased traffic load of the Dartford tunnel. Now the tunnel carries traffic one way and the bridge the other. The A282 "Dartford Crossing" road joins the two ends of the M25, the London Orbital Road.

7. This bridge lies in a southern state of the U.S. and is known as both the "Overseas Highway" and what other name?

From Quiz A Bridge To Fear

Answer: Seven Mile Bridge, Florida

This bridge runs over the channel between the Florida Strait and the Gulf of Mexico. It connects Little Duck Key in the lower keys to Key Vaca in the middle keys. This is the only road from the keys to the mainland, so in cases of evacuation it is KEY. It is built to withstand hurricane winds. These seven miles make a very scenic route, although scary at times when it crosses long stretches of water. The bridge was completed in 1982 at a cost of $45 million. Any phobias about height, water, open or closed spaces might deter you from using it.

8. The Belgrade bridge commonly known as Branko's Bridge (Brankov Most), situated at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, takes its official name from what?

From Quiz Ten Bridges of Belgrade

Answer: A slogan

Branko's bridge is a 450 m long road girder bridge over the River Sava. It connects the densely populated areas of the old city and the modern parts of Belgrade, the New Belgrade. The first bridge in the same place was built back in 1934 and named the King Aleksandar I Bridge, after the then-king of Yugoslavia. It was a chain-stayed bridge with pylons decorated by famous sculptor Ivan Mestroviæ, in Serb-Byzantine style. The bridge was partially destroyed in the German aerial bombardment on 6th of April 1941, and completely destroyed in the American bombardment in 1944. After the war, the new bridge was built (conserving the same artistically valuable pylon) in 1955-57 and was named Most Bratstva i Jedinstva (Brotherhood and Unity bridge), but the name never really caught on. Instead it was commonly known as Branko's Bridge, because it exits into Branko's Street (named after Branko Radièeviæ, Serbian romanticist poet). However, when later Branko Æopiæ, another known Serbian writer, committed suicide from the bridge, the confusion about its name became widespread. A minority of people know the bridge by its formal name, Brotherhood and Unity Bridge.

9. The Romans were big builders. They built viaducts to carry roads and aqueducts to carry water. Which famous aqueduct was built near Nimes in the South of France sometime before AD 100 ?

From Quiz Great Bridges of the World

Answer: Pont du Gard

The Pont du Gard was built by the Romans but the exact date remains a mystery (some say in 1st century BC and some say in 1st century AD). It is hugely impressive though, with 3 tiers of arches and reaches a height of approx 50m. It became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985. In a country boasting many spectacular tourist attractions, Pont du Gard ranked Number 5 in 2001 with 1.4 million visitors. Barbegal aqueduct is in France, Eifel in Germany and Valens in Turkey. All were built by the Romans.

10. In which county of England will you find the Iron Bridge?

From Quiz The Iron Bridge

Answer: Shropshire

In the 17th century the county of Shropshire was a rich source of raw materials including coal, iron-ore, limestone and water. The abundance of these materials attracted early industrialists such as Abraham Darby I to the area. The Darby family operated kilns in Coalbrookdale and it was Abraham Darby III who first proposed the idea of a bridge across the gorge.

11. Which major New York City bridge was the first to be built?

From Quiz Bridges of New York City

Answer: Brooklyn Bridge

Completed in 1883 after 13 years of construction, the Brooklyn Bridge was, at the time, the longest suspension bridge in the world, and the first to use steel wire for that suspension. The use of steel was a real risk since it was a new, unproven material. It turned out to be the right thing to do! Even P. T. Barnum took advantage of the novelty of the new design by walking a herd of 21 elephants, led by Jumbo, across the bridge a year after it opened. Stretching nearly 6000 feet, the Brooklyn Bridge remains one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States.

12. In AD 312, what event occured at the Milvian Bridge over the Tiber?

From Quiz Historic Bridges

Answer: Constantine defeated Maxentius in battle

The Milvian Bridge is on the northern outskirts of Rome. Here, Emperors Constantine and Maxentius fought for control of the western portion of the Roman Empire. Legendarily, Constantine had a vision of the cross emblazoned against the sun before the battle. In the following year, Constantine issued the Edict of Milan, legitimating Christianity and creating a turning point in world history. The meeting of Pope Leo I and Attila, a diplomatic engagement rather than a battle, took place in 452. Hannibal, on the other hand, had been dead for almost 500 years as of AD 312. The bridge is not known as a site of martyrdom.

13. What bridge takes its name from the city itself?

From Quiz A Look at London's Bridges

Answer: London Bridge

Until 1750 the site on which this bridge stands was the only crossing between the two banks of the Thames. It has been replaced many times. In Elizabethan times the then bridge slowed the flow of the river allowing ice to sometimes form on its surface, which enabled "Frost Fairs" to be held on the frozen river.

14. This bridge traverses the Hudson River at New York City.

From Quiz Bridges in the United States

Answer: George Washington Bridge

The George Washington Bridge connects New York and northern New Jersey.

15. Where is the Ponte Vecchio?

From Quiz European Bridges II

Answer: Florence

Built in 1345, it was the only bridge to escape destruction in World War II, and has an art gallery above the jewelry and antique shops on the bridge.

16. How many bridges traverse the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy?

From Quiz European Bridges I

Answer: 3

The Accademia, Scalzi, and Rialto traverse the Grand Canal. The Bridge of Sighs connects the courts with the prison over a minor canal.

17. Which U.S. state has the most Covered Bridges?

From Quiz Covered Bridges

Answer: Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania has 231 covered bridges, Ohio has 157, Indiana has 103 and Vermont has 100. Of course, these numbers are subject to change as weather, vandalism and road construction take their toll on these old timber tunnels. On occasion, especially in Ohio, a new covered bridge is built, so the number of bridges in any state can also go up.

18. In 1883, Benton Jones built this covered bridge. Also known as the Haunted Bridge this bridge measures 107 feet in length. What is the name of the bridge?

From Quiz The Covered Bridges Of Madison County

Answer: Roseman Bridge

The Roseman Bridge is the site where an escapee from the Roseman jail was surrounded by posses in 1892. The man somehow pushed his way up through the top of the bridge, and the men who witnessed this claimed, that for a man to do that he must be innocent. This illustrious bridge was renovated in 1992 at a cost of {$152,515.}

19. The original bridge over the River Kwai, of novel and film fame, can be found in which modern country?

From Quiz Bridges over Troubled Waters

Answer: Thailand

The French novelist Pierre Boulle wrote the 1952 novel "Le Pont de la rivière Kwaï" in 1952, which was made into a film in 1957 by David Lean. The film starred Alec Guinness as Col Nicholson and Sessue Hayakawa as Col Saito. It was filmed mostly around Kitulgala, Sri Lanka. While both stories are largely fictionalised accounts of the building of the bridge, part of the Burma Railway, by WWII prisoners of war, the wartime bridge itself is real, and still exists as a working river crossing.

20. This terrifying tourist attraction in Colorado held the record for the highest suspension bridge in the world until 2003. What's it called?

From Quiz Chain Reaction

Answer: Royal Gorge Bridge

The Royal Gorge Bridge is a tourist attraction in Colorado and a part of the Royal Gorge Park and Bridge amusement park. It spans the Royal Gorge across the Arkansas River and held the record for the highest bridge in the world from 1929 to 2001. It also held the record for the highest suspension bridge until 2003. It runs 955 feet above the Arkansas River and has a total length of 1,260 feet from tower to tower. It is mostly a pedestrian bridge however some vehicles are allowed to cross, before and after the park closes. Large vehicles such as trucks, RVs and buses are not allowed to cross it. In June 2013 much of the park was destroyed by a fire, including forty-eight of the park's fifty-two buildings. Luckily, there wasn't too much damage to the bridge. Only one hundred of 1,292 total wooden planks were destroyed and had to be re-built. The park was closed for repairs and re-opened in August 2014.

21. What was the main reason that the Golden Gate Bridge was built?

From Quiz Golden Gate, Golden State

Answer: To connect San Francisco with Marin County

The growth of San Francisco was below the US growth rates for urban areas. It was America's largest city to be connected to nearby towns only by ferry boat. Firm plans for a bridge proposal date back to 1916. Many people thought a bridge spanning the strait would be impossible as the strait had strong, swirling tides and currents and deep water up to 372 ft (113 m) deep in the the centre of the channel. Experts said that ferocious winds and dense, blinding fogs would preclude any form of bridge being built.

22. Which Florida bridge partially collapsed in 1980 after being struck by a passing ship, killing 35 motorists?

From Quiz Bridges of Sighs

Answer: Sunshine Skyway Bridge, Tampa

In a severe thunderstorm on the morning of May 9th, 1980, the freighter Summit Venture struck one of the supporting columns of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge as the ship tried to enter Tampa Bay. Over 1200 feet of the southbound lane of the bridge plunged 150 feet into the water, causing 35 deaths among the passengers in one Greyhound bus, six cars and a truck. Amazingly, one man, Mr. Wesley MacIntire, survived when his pickup truck first hit the ship before falling into the bay. Before the remains of the bridge were finally removed, he drove to the opening and dropped 35 carnations into the waters below as a memorial to those lost on the day he survived.

23. What authority in 1670 blocked the construction of several bridges across the Thames?

From Quiz Thames Bridges

Answer: The Company of Watermen

Two additional bridges were considered for Lambeth and Putney, but vetoed by the Watermen as it would threaten the livelihood of the Rivermen who were also on call as the naval reserve.

24. Ghosts may haunt this bridge and its beauty. At least twenty people died during the Brooklyn Bridge's construction, including the architect who designed it. What was his name?

From Quiz XO, to the Bridge!

Answer: John A. Roebling

John A. Roebling gained a reputation for his architectual skills with his design of many bridges across the United States. Some of these included the Waco Suspension Bridge in Waco, Texas, and the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Brooklyn Bridge was his greatest project, and the last one he oversaw due to a tragic accident. He was performing compass readings when his foot was crushed in an accident. He had to have his toes amputated and the wound turned into an infection, from which he never recovered and died of tetanus. However before his death, he passed the work onto his son, Washington Roebling. Washington also suffered from injury and ill health during the bridge's construction. Because he was sick during the majority of the construction, he oversaw its work from his apartment. His wife delivered his plans and instructions to workers. Source: "John A. Roebling" Wikepedia,"10 Things You May Not Know about the Brooklyn Bridge" History Channel

25. This is one of the world's tallest vehicular bridges, 1125 feet above the Tarn Valley, in southern France. What is its name?

From Quiz A Bridge To Fear

Answer: Millau Bridge

A bit taller than the Eiffel Tower, this bridge is often surrounded by fog or mist, making it look like a futuristic floating road with several high towers. If you look way way down you will see the Tarn river and valley, while driving across over 8,000 feet of its expanse. The bridge opened in 2004.

26. During the Second World War, Belgrade's Old Sava Bridge (Stari Savski Most) had explosives laid for its destruction upon German retreat in 1944, but already-lit wires were cut at the last minute by whom?

Answer: A teacher

The Old Sava Bridge is a 410m long tied arch bridge, which serves as a combined road and tram bridge. Occupying German forces built the Old Sava Bridge in 1942, naming it Prinz Eugen. While the battle for the liberation of Belgrade was still raging in October of 1944, Germans laid the explosive to destroy the bridge on retreat. However, citizen Miladin Zaric, a teacher, spotted the opportunity when the bridge was briefly unattended, and cut already lit wires connected to explosives, making this bridge one of the very few bridges in Europe which the retreating Germans did not manage to destroy. In his testimony, he said he had studied the German activity around the bridge during the entire month, spotting the locations of explosives, cables etc. After the war, the bridge was briefly know as 'German Bridge', but both of its names, formal and informal, were quickly forgotten. Tihi and Prle are fictitious characters in "Otpisani", the popular TV drama about the resistance in Belgrade during Nazi occupation.

27. This bridge is for pedestrians only, and notorious for an early "wobbling" problem. At its south end stands the imposing Tate Modern gallery, whilst St Pauls Cathedral graces the northern riverbank.

Answer: Millennium Bridge

The London Millennium Footbridge opened in June 2000. It earned its nickname "The Wobbly Bridge" after a large gathering of charity walkers felt the bridge swaying slightly as they walked over it on the first day of its public opening. The bridge was subsequently closed and stabilised, finally reopening wobble-free in 2002.

28. Completed in 1894 and described as a bascule bridge, it has two giant cantilevers which can be lifted up to allow river traffic to pass. It is surely the most iconic bridge in London and an absolute "must see" when visiting.

Answer: Tower Bridge

In the second half of the 19th century road traffic was growing rapidly requiring an additional river crossing but the London Docklands and its river borne traffic were also still flourishing (the peak year for the Docklands in terms of tonnage handled would not be reached until 1964). A competition to find an appropriate solution was launched in 1876 but it wasn't until 1884 that a winning design was approved. Construction started in 1886 and it finally opened on 30th June 1894. Although commercial river traffic has diminished enormously with the decline of the Docklands (prior to its subsequent rebirth as a financial centre) the bascules are still raised about 1000 times per year.
