Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. All owls are nocturnal.

Answer: False

Although owls have a reputation for being nocturnal, this isn't universally true. A few, such as the snowy owl or the short-eared owl, often hunt by day and may be seen in open country.
2. How many 'families' of owls are there?

Answer: two

The two families of owls are the typical and the barn owls. The typical owls contain about 167 species, and the 'barn' owls contain about 19 species. Barn owls are the most widespread species while typical owls are also known as the true owls.
3. Owls must turn their entire heads to look sideways.

Answer: True

Their eyes are directed forward and are encased in a capsule of bone which allows little eye movement. This is why they can turn their heads over 250 degrees; it allows them to see in a wide range, compensating for their lack of eye movement.
4. Owls range over the whole globe except for which region?

Answer: Antarctica

Barn owls are found in North America, Britain, and many other countries. Barred owls live throughout North America, primarily in eastern Canada and the United States. Owls can be found in Siberia and Africa as well--throughout all weather extremes.
5. Owls nest in many places, but which of these do they NOT tend to use?

Answer: swamps

The nesting habits of owls are highly variable. Mountains, forests, deserts, and plains all provide habitat for owls. In addition, because there are so many species of owls, their nesting preferences vary greatly.
6. All owls lay which color of egg?

Answer: White

All owl eggs are white, with occasional light speckling depending on the owl breed. Owl egg clutches are usually about four eggs, with some numbering up to a dozen. Depending on the breed, owl eggs can range from half an inch in diameter to about three inches.
7. Owls feed entirely on animals.

Answer: True

They eat anything from insects to mammals as large as hares---a few eat fish and crayfish! Most owls hunt rodents and other small animals. Insects can also be included in their diet.
8. A single barn owl can eat over 1,000 mice in a year.

Answer: True

Strange but true! Because of this, some farmers try to attract owls to their farm in an attempt to cull their rodent population. In groups, owls can kill hundreds of rodents per night.
9. Most owls have the ability to fly almost silently. However, in barn owls this talent compromises which trait of most other birds?

Answer: waterproofing

Barn owls have distinctive feathers that absorb sound as they fly, helping them to remain silent while hunting. However, their feathers are not waterproof like those of other birds. They have a difficult time staying warm when wet and often cannot hunt in the rain.
10. Which owl is the smallest in the world?

Answer: Elf

The elf owl is found in parts of Mexico and the Southwestern United States. Measuring only 4.9 to 5.7 inches long (12.5 to 14.5 cm), they have a wingspan of about 10.5 inches (27 cm). They can be hunted by other large birds, such as hawks and even other owls.
