Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Humans have seven vertebrae in their necks. How many neck vertebrae do owls have?

Answer: 14

This is one of several adaptations in owls that allows them to rotate their heads up to 270 degrees.
2. Which type of owl is commonly found near farms and fields all year round?

Answer: Barn owl

The barn owl hunts for mice and other small animals that can be easily spotted in open farmland. Other owls may be seen during the winter when food sources are not so readily available.
3. Which general type of owl does not have feathered lower legs?

Answer: Fishing owls

Fishing owls do not have feathered legs because the feathers are not needed to protect them from the bites of their preferred prey: fish.
4. What aspect of an owl's feathers allow it to fly more quietly than other birds?

Answer: Soft edges

While owls have soft-edged feathers, the majority of bird varieties have stiff feathers. The soft feathers result in silent flight which gives owls an advantage when hunting at night.
5. How many talons do owls have on each foot?

Answer: Four

Owls can spread their talons apart to have a better chance of catching prey. The talons are also designed to stab into the body of the prey, making it less likely to escape.
6. Who helps to raise young owls?

Answer: Both mother and father

Mother owls care for their young for several months. The fathers help by bringing food for the family and even taking a turn sitting on the eggs before they hatch.
7. Owls are classified as what type of bird?

Answer: Raptors

Raptors are also called "birds of prey." This group includes several other types of birds such as hawks, falcons, eagles, and vultures.
8. The owl spits out undigested food in small portions called what?

Answer: Pellets

Because owls often eat their prey whole, owl pellets often contain items such as the bones, fur and teeth of smaller animals. Scientists study owl pellets to research what different owls eat.
9. An owl's stomach has how many parts?

Answer: Two

The first stomach has enzymes that start the digestive process. The second stomach filters out unusable items. These same items are then compacted into the owl pellet.
10. What should you NOT do if you happen to find an injured owl?

Answer: Feed the owl

It is important to remember where the owl was found so that it can be returned to its natural habitat once it has recovered.
