3. Which of these animals can make a good guard "dog" if you don't have the real thing?

Answer: Geese

It is believed that geese have been used as guard animals for centuries, going all the way back to ancient Rome, and they are even better at it than some dogs! Why? Geese have excellent vision and can detect the slightest movement or anything that is out of the ordinary.

They honk really loudly when startled and they are very protective of their territory. Geese were sacred to the goddess Juno in ancient Rome, and were left to live around her temple without human interference. There is a story that dates back to 390 BC when Rome was attacked by the Gauls, that those temple geese were the ones who sounded the alarm, which virtually saved the city. If you want to try it on your farm, it's best to give them their own enclosure, as geese will wander off, and remember, that they are not at their best at night, when they are blinded by the darkness.

4. All birds in the family identified commonly as spoonbills eat what?

Answer: insects, crustaceans and fish

Spoonbills are shallow wading predators. Their bills are shaped on the top and bottom halves with a wide roughly circular, flat bulge near the tip, leading to the name, since, viewed from above or below the bill looks like a spoon. They hunt by sweeping their bill, (partially open) through the water and snapping it shut to capture any small prey they contact in the water.

They are strictly carnivorous and will hunt in either fresh or salt water with a general preference for fresh water.

7. What do newly born rattlesnakes not have?

Answer: Rattles

Baby rattle snakes do not have rattles, but they do have a 'prebutton' at the end of their tails. As they shed skins, this develops into a rattle. They can shed several times a year, during which time they add segments to their tails and develop rattles. [Source, Arizona Herpetological Association]. Of all the human deaths caused by venomous snakes in the USA each year, eight out of 10 are the result of rattlesnake bites.

8. The name of which amphibian, found only in Lake Xochimilco in Mexico, comes from the Aztec word meaning "Water Monster"?

Answer: Axolotl

Axolotl is the only answer that looks like it comes from the Aztec language. This creature has a life cycle similar to that of a frog, but lack of iodine in Lake Xochimilco keeps it from developing beyond the larval stage.

10. What do you call a group of porcupines?

Answer: prickle

Porcupines are rodents with a coat of sharp spines or quills, which are used for defense and camouflage. They are indigenous to the Americas, Africa and southern Asia. They are generally herbivores and feed on leaves, herbs and twigs. "Prickle" sounds like a pretty appropriate name for this group, doesn't it?
