5. Which of these beings usually fails the "mirror test", where they are placed in front of a mirror and watched to see if they can identify themselves?

Answer: Newborn human

The mirror test places animals in front of a mirror, often with a spot of dye or rouge placed on them to be visible in a mirror, to see if they understand that they are looking at themselves or another animal. Elephants, bonobos, and European magpies have all passed the test - the latter the first non-mammal to have done so. Humans typically cannot pass the test until about 12-18 months.

9. What does "lasso locomotion" allow brown tree snakes to do?

Answer: Climb smooth cylinders more efficiently

The brown tree snake (Boiga irregularis)) is an invasive species in Guam. Since it's arrival in the 1940s, the snake has decimated many local bird populations. To help the birds, scientists built special nesting boxes that had a smooth cylindrical metal baffle underneath them that was designed to encourage slipping and prevent the snakes from climbing to the boxes.

The brown tree snakes were then observed engaging in a new behaviour, called "lasso locomotion" by the scientists. The snakes wrapped themselves around the cylinder, tied themselves in a knot, and squeezed the smooth baffle very tightly as they wriggled their way up to the nesting box.

In 2021, scientists report that new baffles to protect the nests are being designed.

10. It's not a rodent, but what sort of animal was once known as a reremouse?

Answer: Bat

Reremouse is an archaic term for a bat. The term comes from Anglo-Saxon, meaning "moving mouse," presumably because bats can fly. Despite being a small, furry mammal, bats are not closely related to mice. There are over 1200 known species of bats.
