Example: Present tense of was + ? = mammal that can be grizzly The answer is Arkansas (AR), because the present tense of "was" is "be", the mammal that can be grizzly is a bear, and the abbreviation of Arkansas is AR, so be + ar = bear.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Study + ? = dance

Answer: Georgia (GA)

Con + GA = conga

A conga is a dance that was developed in Cuba and not in either the Republic or the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as the name might suggest. The dance was performed as part of a carnival or festivity. Some Cuban mayors tried to get the dance banned due to perceived similarities with African dances, but it was not usually successful.
Conga is also a type of line dance where people form a line that is either straight or can curve into a circle. This dance involves three shuffle steps and then a kick. A great way to start a party or to get excitement flowing during a party is to do a conga line.
2. Follow + ? = suit maker

Answer: Oregon (OR)

Tail + OR = tailor

The word tailor can be used as a noun or a verb. As a noun, it refers to someone whose job it is to make or change clothing. As a fourteen-year-old kid, Andrew Johnson, later to become the 17th president of the United States, was an apprentice to a tailor but he and his brother William, also an apprentice to the same tailor, ended up running away for several years.
As a verb, tailor refers to the act of making or changing clothing that the profession called tailor produces.
3. Pull on + ? = jacket

Answer: Indiana (IN)

Jerk + IN = jerkin

A jerkin is a sleeveless garment traditionally worn by men. This vest is often made of leather. Jerkins were originally worn to protect military troops from the weather in contrast with the heavy coats other troops wore. People still wear jerkins although now it is for everybody (not just military) and for nearly any reason (not just safety from the elements).
4. Young dog + ? = student

Answer: Illinois (IL)

Pup + IL = pupil

Another word for pupil is student. This refers to any kind of student, not just those in school. The word has its origin in the Latin word pupillus meaning ward, as in a pupil was the ward of a guardian. This is somewhat similar to how people leave their children in the care of the school while the student has his/her education.
A pupil can also be the innermost part of the eye, the part that is almost always black. The eye contains the sclera (the outermost part, which is almost always white), the iris (the middle part, which is different colors for different people), and finally the pupil.
5. Waterfowl + ? = showing off

Answer: Kentucky (KY)

Swan + KY = swanky

If something is swanky, then that means it is elegant or fashionable. If someone wants to appear swanky, it may be a sign they want to show off their wealth. However, it could also mean they just like something and want to wear it, regardless of how swanky it is. If a restaurant or club or some other place is said to be swanky, then it can be a sign that is an exclusive place with formal wear being part of the dress code. On the other hand, it can be just a nicer place when compared to other places. Whatever the case, swanky things are usually considered at least a bit above the average.
6. In the past + ? = pain

Answer: New York (NY)

Ago + NY = agony

To be in agony means to be in suffering. It doesn't have to be physical suffering; it can be mental as well. Examples include students stressing over an exam, pain you feel after an operation, or worry about how to complete immediate tasks or determining which tasks can be done now versus later. Solutions to agony can include rest/relaxation, having someone help you along the way, or seeking professional advice, among other ways. It depends on the type of agony you are experiencing.
7. Forbid + ? = financial institutions

Answer: Kansas (KS)

Ban + KS = banks

Banks are financial institutions where you can store your money. However, a lot of banks don't actually have a special compartment for your money; the money you deposit can be given to someone else who wishes to make a withdrawal. The first bank is the Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena, which was established in 1472. Banks can be privately owned or established by the government.
A bank can also refer to the land that is near the edge of a body of water and is usually sloping down to the water.
8. Preserve + ? = waterway

Answer: Alabama (AL)

Can + AL = canal

A canal is an artificial waterway that allows ships to pass from one body of water to another, usually with land on both sides of the canal. Locks (often multiple locks) are part of the canal, which allow the water to raise or lower. This is necessary because bodies of water are of different heights. Once a ship goes to a certain point, the lock gates on both sides of the section of the canal are closed, and then one or more valves gets opened (to lower water levels) or closed (to raise water levels). Once the water levels before and after the lock gate are equal, then the gates are opened, and the boat continues on its journey. Ships that can pass through canals can be work-related, military, or recreational.
Canals provide a shortcut to a destination, thus eliminating days, weeks, and even months, from a journey. Examples of canals include the Erie, Panama, and Suez Canal.
9. Dry + ? = calm

Answer: Nebraska (NE)

Sere + NE = serene

If something is serene, then that means it is calm, soothing, or peaceful. Serene objects could be colors, mainly light colors like sky blue. It could be a sound like flowing water. Sunsets, sunrises, or just peace and quiet are also considered serene settings. If a video, picture, painting, etc. contains one or more of these things, then a person's viewing experience would also be considered serene. This is also helpful after a long and stressful day, if you're looking for a way to wind down.
10. Definite article + ? = motif, particularly in literature

Answer: Maine (ME)

The + ME = theme

The theme of a piece of work is its subject matter or main idea. This can be done explicitly or implicitly. Despite what "main" might imply, a piece of work can have more than one theme. These themes can simply be characteristic traits, such as redemption, love, forgiveness, courage, or overcoming negative traits. It can also be actions like coming-of-age or good versus evil. Themes can also be something as simple as nature and peaceful.
Likewise, a theme park would be a park with some aspect in common throughout the park, whether this is a type of ride or whether some characteristic of each ride is similar.
Finally, a theme song is a musical composition that represents a movie, radio program, or television show, or some form of similar entertainment.
