Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Kitchen worker: COLORADO +

Answer: OKLAHOMA

COLORADO + OKLAHOMA = CO + OK

A cook can fulfill many roles in a professional kitchen from being a head chef to working 'on the line' preparing ingredients or dishes. To examine the range with which cooks might be seen, consider Colorado. Steve Ells, for instance, started his career as a sous chef in San Francisco before establishing the first Chipotle Restaurants while "Top Chef" contestant Carrie Baird was based in Denver. Both of them hailed from the Rocky Mountain State. Michelin Star recipient Rick Bayless was born in Oklahoma.
2. A fashion or style: MISSOURI +

Answer: DELAWARE

MISSOURI + DELAWARE = MO + DE

The mode of something refers to the way that it's done, and in styling and fashion, it refers to a trend that occurs during a key period (like Ugg boots in the 2000s).

The word 'mode' also has different meanings in other contexts. In statistics, it's a series of numbers appearing with the highest frequency. In gaming, it's a difficulty or setting.
3. Crushed grapes: WISCONSIN +

Answer: NEBRASKA

WISCONSIN + NEBRASKA = WI + NE

There's more to it than crushing grapes, of course, since the resulting juice needs to ferment properly to become wine, but grapes certainly are the main ingredient in most wines. There are many criteria required to ensure that a region is suitable for growing wine grape cultivars, and while most would assume that these are generally only in California in the United States, you would also be able to find a small handful of these regions, as per American Viticultural Area designation, in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Ledge AVA, for instance, is dotted with wineries near Lake Michigan.
4. Terra firma: LOUISIANA +

Answer: NORTH DAKOTA

LOUISIANA + NORTH DAKOTA = LA + ND

And both of these locations would count as terra firma as they're both solid land. Louisiana might be the one of the two states, however, where you might be searching for it since it's a coastal state along the Gulf of Mexico. If you're on a boat looking to get off the water you'd be searching for some terra firma. The term translates literally from Latin.
5. Cherished: DELAWARE +

Answer: ARKANSAS

DELAWARE + ARKANSAS = DE + AR

Something or someone that is held with deep affection would be considered 'dear' to someone, and it's why someone might start a letter with 'Dear John...' or similar. If an item is considered precious for sentimental reasons, you might hold it dear, otherwise, if something bad were to happen to it, you might exclaim "Oh dear!"

Naturally, this has nothing to do with the homophone 'deer', which is an animal you can find in both Delaware and Arkansas.
6. Units of resistance: OHIO +

Answer: MISSISSIPPI

OHIO + MISSISSIPPI = OH + MS

Ohm refers to the unit at which electrical resistance is calculated and it was named after German scientist Georg Simon Ohm, who elaborated on the electrical cell originally constructed by Alessandro Volta. Ohm was also responsible for Ohm's Law, which determined that the voltage of a given conductor is equal to its current multiplied by its resistance.
7. Beach bucket: PENNSYLVANIA +

Answer: ILLINOIS

PENNSYLVANIA + ILLINOIS = PA + IL

There are very few differences, if any, between most pails and buckets, but pails are usually made to carry liquids. Jack and Jill, for example, went up the hill to fetch a pail of water. You'd be likely to find a pail in either of the states provided for this question. Pails would be used on the farms in Amish country in Pennsylvania's Lancaster County while in Illinois, you might take one to the sands of Illinois Beach State Park on Lake Michigan's shores.
8. Mother to a baby: MASSACHUSETTS +

Answer: MASSACHUSETTS

MASSACHUSETTS + MASSACHUSETTS = MA + MA

Mama would simply be an affectionate term (and an easy word) from a child to its mother. Alternatively, the word has been given to women as a nickname in the past with The Mamas and the Papas' Mama Cass Elliot being a notable real life example and Mama Morton being a fictional one (from the musical and film "Chicago").

In Massachusetts, the first women to be elected to the House of Representatives were Susan Fitzgerald and Sylvia Donaldson, both in 1923, while Elizabeth Warren became the first female senator for the state in 2013. Perhaps they could be considered the Mamas of Mass.
9. Woolly mammal: ALABAMA + PENNSYLVANIA +

Answer: CALIFORNIA

ALABAMA + PENNSYLVANIA + CALIFORNIA = AL + PA + CA

An alpaca is a llama-like creature that makes its natural home in the Andes Mountains of South America, and if you were to see one in any of the States presented in this question, it'd likely be in a zoo or on a farm. Known for their thick wool used to make warm clothing, these mammals are often domesticated and raised as grazing farm animals. They're not commonly eaten since their value comes from their wool.
10. Money received: INDIANA + COLORADO +

Answer: MAINE

INDIANA + COLORADO + MAINE = IN + CO + ME

Your personal income is how much you earn through any source, and generally your income is taxed. Though the United States has a federal income tax, each state also has its own income tax that's attributed, and this can vary depending on where one lives. Historically, of these three states, Maine has had a higher income tax than Indiana and Colorado though the numbers vary regularly.
