Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What you find on a counter to sample perfume

Answer: tester

TESTER - Perfume testers are bottles of the original perfume that come without the package and often without the lid. They are used in stores to allow people to smell the perfume or test it on their skin and are, usually, not for sale.
2. Sample of something or one who tries food

Answer: taster

Tester, change first E for an A = TASTER - A taster is a small portion of something, an item, or an experience that allows you to sample it. A taster is a person who tastes food or drink to evaluate it or inspect it and it is usually in the context of a job.
3. One of our senses

Answer: taste

Taster, remove R = TASTE - Taste is the sense that allows us to try something in our mouth and distinguish its flavor. There are five basic tastes, sweet, bitter, sour, salty, and umami.
4. A soft sticky mixture

Answer: paste

Taste, change first letter to P = PASTE - We can make a paste with a powder and any liquid. In most cases, the liquid is water, and the substance produced is used as glue.
5. A stick of soft color used in painting

Answer: pastel

Paste, add L to the end = PASTEL - Pastels are art mediums made of powdered pigment and a binder. They are soft and creamy and the artwork they produce is between a drawing and a painting. The word pastel can also mean a soft color that has a "washed out" quality.
6. The head of a household or an expert in something

Answer: master

MASTER - The word master, as a noun, has many meanings. It can mean the head of a household, the owner of servants or slaves, an expert or very skilled person, a graduate degree, or an original copy or prototype of a work.

Changing the P and L of Pastel to M and R also gives us MASTER.
7. One of the words from the Olympic motto

Answer: faster

Master, change M to F = FASTER - "Faster, Higher, Stronger" is the Olympic motto which is the English translation of the Latin "Citius, Altius, Fortius." The motto was introduced at the 1924 Paris Olympics on an idea by Baron Pierre de Coubertin.
8. Comparative of a word that means thick or large

Answer: fatter

Faster, change S to T = FATTER - Fatter is the comparative form of the word "fat" which means having excess flesh for an animal or having a large or thick form for an object.
9. Relating to the last part of a period or event

Answer: latter

Fatter, change F to L = LATTER - Another definition of the word "latter" is being the second among two things.
10. We write and post it

Answer: letter

Latter, change A to E = LETTER - I'm afraid this last word and its meaning sound obsolete in our days. Very few people write letters and even fewer post them. Emails and face-timing seem to have replaced them for good.
