Magic Eye: What Are You Staring At? Quiz

Deep focus, not out of focus. A stereogram, or "magic eye" image is one in which a 3 dimensional image can be hidden in a 2 dimensional image. Not everyone can see these, but with a little experimentation maybe you can?

Author's Note: Seeing the hidden objects in this quiz may take a little time and experimentation. Some people simply may be unable to see them.

To see each hidden object, first click (or press) on the image to zoom in on it. You need to then stare at it with "deep focus" - that is, by relaxing your eyes and changing the distance between your eyes and the image. You want to imagine a focal point beyond the actual screen itself - off in the distance, where the image stars to blur. It can be tricky to see your first image, but once you get the technique down they come into focus pretty easily!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Remember, you can click on an image to zoom it larger. Let's start with a simple object. You should see a 3 dimensional image pop out at you when your eyes are looking at it correctly. What is hidden in this image?

Answer: Heart

A 3-dimensional heart should pop out at you if you are seeing this right! Some images are easier to see than others, and this one should pop out pretty quickly once you have the basic technique down.
2. I find that seeing these is easiest on a tablet. You can move the screen closer and further away from you while keeping a locked focus, which helps the images come into view. This one is for our British friends. What is hidden in this magic eye photo?

Answer: Teapot

A lovely teapot, with the handle on the left and spout on the right. I hope this one was easier to see once you got the first one down!
3. Let's try something a little more detailed. When this one finally comes into view what do you see?

Answer: Tricycle

Hidden in this image is a 3D tricycle, traveling to the left.

The first tricycle can be traced back to a German watch maker, Stephan Farffler, who created a three-wheeled wheelchair to get around in the mid 1600s. Clever.
4. It looks like a field of purple nothingness, but something big is hidden in this one! What is hiding?

Answer: Dinosaur

It is a brontosaurus, and he is facing left!

"Brontosaurus", interestingly enough, is Greek for "Thunder Lizard".

I can't help recall the Anne Elk sketch from Monty Python where a so-called expert brags about her amazing theory on brontosauruses. After a long build up where she claims her theory is so amazing she states it:

"All brontosauruses are thin at one end, much, much thicker in the middle, and then thin again at the far end."

Well that sort of sums it up, doesn't it.
5. There are a number of objects in this imagine. How many can you see?

Answer: Six

This one is one of the more difficult ones that it took for me to see, maybe because the upside-down cups aren't connected. There are six of them in total!
6. What famous person is best represented here?

Answer: Amelia Earhart

It is an airplane! It's not a perfect match since the one in this image has two propellers, whereas Earhart's plane was a single propeller Lockheed Vega 5B.

In her attempt to circumnavigate the globe by plane, Earhart disappeared over the Pacific in July 1937. Plane wreckage has never been found.
7. Who best fits with the hidden image?

Answer: Jimi Hendrix

It's a picture of an electric guitar.

Jimi Hendrix usually played Fender Stratocaster guitars, along with a Gibson Flying V.
8. Hidden here we have not an object, but an entire scene from a movie? What movie is represented here?

Answer: King Kong

Yes, it's a giant gorilla terrorizing a city! King Kong is often referred to as the "eighth wonder of the world". This fact sometimes comes up on pub trivia nights, so now you can be team savior!
9. This one is a little trickier because it has some hidden words. Where would you be most likely to hear these words?

Answer: At a Party

The words are "Happy New Year"!

Interestingly, the Line Islands (part of Kiribati) and Tonga, in the Pacific Ocean, are the first places to welcome the New Year.
10. Goodness, you need to make sure you don't end up on the wrong side of this! What on earth am I talking about?

Answer: Pirates

A skull and crossbones would most likely be seen on a pirate flag! Known as a "Jolly Roger", these black and white flags were used in the 1710s and 1720s by a number of pirates in towns and on ships.
