Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which novel by John Steinbeck does the photo represent?

Answer: The Grapes Of Wrath

"Wrath" is a synonym of "anger", hence the second emoji.

"The Grapes of Wrath" is one of Steinbeck's most famous books. It tells the tale of the Joad family's move to California from Oklahoma during the Great Depression. The Joad family includes: the protagonist, Tom Joad; his Ma and Pa; his Granpa and Granma; his brothers, Al, Noah, and Winfield; his sisters, pregnant Rose of Sharon, and Ruthie; and Rose of Sharon's husband Connie Rivers.

Steinbeck also wrote the famous "Of Mice and Men".
2. Which novel by Alexandre Dumas does this photo represent?

Answer: The Queen's Necklace

The pictured necklace doesn't look too regal, or at all like what's in the book, but emoji didn't have any other necklace, and beggars can't be choosers.

"The Queen's Necklace" features Marie Antoinette, Louis XVI, and Cardinal de Rohan; and the plot is based on the scandal of one of the most expensive necklaces in the world. Originally created for Madame du Barry, de Rohan was tricked into supposedly buying it for the Queen--- Oh, I'm not saying more. I already said NO spoilers.

Dumas also wrote "The Three Musketeers".
3. Which novel by Fyodor Dostoyevsky does this photo represent?

Answer: Devils

Yep. More than one devil/demon, hence the clue.

Since "Devils" was originally written in Russian, an alternate title is "Demons". However, my copy is titled "Devils" so that's the title I use. "Devils" is based on the true story of a young Russian man who was brutally murdered by strangling, shot through the head, and his battered body thrown in a pond. His only crime was the hope of leaving a band of revolutionaries who no longer considered him one of them.

Dostoyevsky also wrote "Crime and Punishment".
4. Which novel by Agatha Christie does this photo represent?

Answer: Five Little Pigs

Ok, the five pigs in the picture may not look that little.

"Five Little Pigs" tells the fictional tale of Carla Lemarchant asking Hercule Poirot to solve the 16-year-old case of the murder of her father, supposedly by her mother. Poirot tells Carla that her mother may be innocent, or may be guilty, and he was only going to find the whole truth, even if it wasn't what Carla wanted to hear.

Agatha Christie also wrote "Death On The Nile".
5. Which novel by H.G. Wells does this photo represent?

Answer: When The Sleeper Wakes

Sleepy emoji wakes to become the normal emoji!

"When The Sleeper Wakes" is the original title of this timeless classic, but as of late, it also became known as "The Sleeper Awakes", so I had to include both options. This book is about a man who sleeps for 203 years, only to wake up in a new London as the richest man in the world.

H.G. Wells also wrote "The Time Machine".
6. Which novella by Mikhail Bulgakov does this photo represent?

Answer: The Heart of a Dog

Don't be misled by that sweet heart and adorable puppy; it's not really like that in the book! A dirty street dog called Sharik is transformed into a despicable man, by a Soviet scientist. This new, man, Sharik finds pleasure in his new position as the government official in charge of clearing the city of its cats. My interpretation of the book title is that even though Sharik is now a human, he is still a dog at heart and still enjoys terrorizing cats.

Bulgakov also brought us that other literary treasure, "The Master and Margarita".
7. Which Sherlock Holmes short story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle does this photo represent?

Answer: The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle

A carbuncle is a gem, and therefore we have a diamond representation.

"The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle" is about a missing gem, lost goose, and pardon. After finding a stolen gem in the crop of a goose, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson track it down and eventually find the criminal. Holmes decides to pardon the man, as it was Christmas, a time of forgiveness.

Sir Conan Doyle also wrote "The Hound Of The Baskervilles".
8. Which novel by Agatha Christie does this photo represent?

Answer: The Clocks

Yeah, this is probably the most straightforward picture in this whole quiz.

"The Clocks" is about Sheila Webb, a typist, who is sent to work for blind Millicent Pebmarsh, and discovers a dead body at Millicent's house. Colin Lamb and his friend Inspector Dick Hardcastle call in the assistance of Hercule Poirot. Colin and Sheila fall in love and get married.

Agatha Christie also wrote "A Pocket Full Of Rye".
9. Which novel by Agatha Christie does this photo represent?

Answer: Evil Under The Sun

An evil demon, under a sun. Pretty straightforward, I hope.

"Evil Under The Sun" features the murder of the beautiful Arlena Marshall, strangled by the oceanside. Who committed this crime? Arlena's husband? her lover, Patrick Redfern? Redfern's jealous wife, Christine? Arlena's hateful stepdaughter? her husband's lover? Only Hercule Poirot can find out!

Agatha Christie is well-known for "Death On The Nile".
10. Which novel by Agatha Christie does this photo represent?

Answer: Third Girl

The three girls who share an apartment: Claudia Reece-Holland (represented on the far left) is a secretary; Frances Cary (represented in the middle) is an artist; and Norma Restarick (represented on the far-right) is, well, nothing. Out of work, plain, and depressed. The true murderers in this case put Norma on drugs so that she'd believe she was the real murderer and hand herself in to the police. She has some uncertainty about this though, as she told Hercule Poirot she "might have committed a murder".

Agatha Christie is also known for her "Appointment With Death".
