Shelley met successful Italian actor Vittorio Gassman in 1952 and they had a child together, Vittoria Gassman, an MD and Internal Medicine specialist.

The marriage to actor Tony Franciosa lasted from 1957-1960. He came to prominence in the drama "A Hatful of Rain" both on the stage and screen.

Gerry DeFord in 2006 was her last husband. DeFord was her companion for the last years of her life. In the late hours of her life, crippled by heart disease and confined to a wheelchair, Shelley Winters married Gerry DeFord, with whom she had lived for nineteen years. A friend and fellow actress, Sally Kirkland, an ordained minister as well, performed the ceremony against the advice of her daughter. Jerry DeFord was her driver and caregiver in her declining years.
