Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Encore Boston Harbor

Located in Everett, Massachusetts, about five miles from Boston, Encore Boston Harbor is both a casino and luxury hotel. The Wynn Resorts' plans for the property were approved in 2015, and it opened in 2019. On opening day, the property, situated on 33 acres of land, housed 671 rooms, a spa, event area, and several bars and restaurants. Shops and other attractions are available to visitors as well.

The casino was designed by Roger Thomas, who is known for creating luxurious interiors in casinos like The Mirage and Bellagio. With approximately 200,000 square feet (18,581 square meters) of gaming space, it features slot machines and table games like baccarat and roulette. Poker rooms are also available.

Did you know that gambling is a popular hobby world wide? A 2025 article states that about 1.6 billion people worldwide regularly gamble, with another estimated 4.2 billion only gambling once a year. And, yes! Buying lottery tickets is a form of gambling!
2. Mohegan Sun

Owned by the Mohegan Tribe, the Mohegan Sun is located on 240 acres of reservation land in Uncasville, Connecticut, about 45 miles from the state's capital, Hartford. Along with the casino, the complex includes a sports arena, theater, and event rooms.

The gaming area is 364,000 square feet (33,800 square meters) in size, and has slot machines and tables used for games such as poker, blackjack, and craps. There is also a racebook, or sportsbook, an option for sports betting; at Mohegan Sun it is used for betting on horse and greyhound racing.

The U.S. Supreme Court legalized sports betting nationwide in 2018; in 2023 the sports betting industry reported $10.92 billion in earnings, an increase of over 44% from the year before.
3. Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa

Atlantic City, New Jersey, is the site of the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, which was completed in 2003 and renovated in 2005-2006. In addition to the casino, hotel, and spa, a theater, outdoor park, and event center can be found on the property.

The new casino floor boasts 161,000 square feet (15,000 square meters) of space for slot machines, table games, and poker tables. On-line gaming is also offered. According to the American Gaming Association, on-line gaming is a $240 billion industry in the United States, and is expected to grow even more in the coming years.
4. Seminole Casino Hotel Immokalee

Found about 35 miles from Naples, Florida, the Seminole Casino Hotel Immokalee is owned by the Seminole Tribe. Opened in 1994, and expanded in 2009, the casino contains 51,000 square feet (4,738 square meters), with slot machines and approximately live table games. A hotel was added to the complex in 2015.

Casinos owned and operated by Native American Tribes are an important part of the gaming industry in the United States. An article published in 2025 states that about half of the federally recognized tribes across the country operate casinos. The National Indian Gaming Commission regulates tribal gaming at these casinos.
5. Hoosier Park

Found 30 miles northeast of Indianapolis, Hoosier Park, officially called Harrah's Hoosier Park Racing & Casino, was originally built and owned by Churchill Down Incorporated and opened in 1994. It was sold in 2007, and officially became classified at that time as a racino when slot machines were added.

A racino offers traditional casino attractions as well as betting on horse racing. Since 1994 the site has annually hosted harness racing's Dan Patch Stakes, and has been chosen to host the prestigious Breeder's Crown (2010, 2020, 2023).

According to "State of the States 2024", about fifty racinos operated in the United States in 2023.
6. Bally's Vicksburg

Bally's Vickburg began as the Rainbow Casino in 1994 with slot machines and gaming tables. It was expanded in 1999, sold in 2020, and renamed Bally's Vicksburg in 2021.

A riverboat casino, Bally's Vicksburg also offers hotel rooms. Its current gaming space is about 35,000 square feet (3,252 square meters), and contains slot machines and table games along with video poker machines.

Mississippi, Iowa, Illinois, and Louisiana are some states that have capitalized on their geographic locations and are popular destinations for riverboat casinos. Missouri still recognizes a 1994 law that says that only excursion gaming boats are allowed on the major rivers (Mississippi and Missouri) in the state; some companies, however, seem to have circumvented the law by building adjacent artificial lakes on the rivers with featured casinos.
7. WinStar World Casino and Resort

Listed on many websites as one of the largest casinos in the world, the WinStar World Casino and Resort is owned by the Chickasaw Nation. Located about 120 miles from Oklahoma City, the complex is situated near the Oklahoma/Texas border.

Opened in 2004, and expanded to include the hotel in 2009, the gaming area boasts an impressive 370,000 square feet (34,000 square meters). With poker tables, table games like craps and roulette, off-track betting for horse and greyhound races, and thousands of slot machines, the complex also includes an event center, golf club, and RV park.

Oklahoma is by far the U.S. state with the most tribal casinos. A January 2025 article, "Tribal Casinos In The US", reported that there are 139 in the state.
8. Apache Nugget Casino

Located about 67 miles from Albuquerque in Cuba, New Mexico, the Apache Nugget Casino is owned by the Jicarilla Apache Nation. Opened in 2004, it contains slot machines, electronic table games, sportsbook, and a members-only club.

Many tribal casinos have been reluctant to offer sports betting, as it is unclear if it would go against the tribal compact with their state. It is apparently legal, however, in New Mexico as tribal casinos are the only ones allowed to offer sports betting.
9. Luxor

The Luxor is found in Paradise, Nevada, which is adjacent to the city of Las Vegas. The hotel and casino were built in 1993 and have been expanded and renovated many times since then. At one point the Luxor even offered an indoor simulated boat ride on the Nile River!

Decorated with a pyramid, Sphinx, obelisk, and other ancient Egyptian motifs, the Luxor contains an esports arena, mall, and events center, along with a 65,214 square feet (6,509 square meters) gaming area. Visitors to the casino can find slot machines, table games, a poker room, video poker, and race and sports betting books.

An esports arena hosts video gaming tournaments and events. Some of the events may involve millions of participants and millions of dollars in prize money. At the Luxor the arena is called the HyperX, and covers 30,000 square feet (2,787 square meters).
10. Yaamara' Resort & Casino

The Yaamara' Resort & Casino is located on the San Manuel Reservation in Highland, California, about 68 miles from Los Angeles. It is owned by the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians. Hotel services are offered on-site, and there is also a theater and event center.

Opened in 1986 as a bingo hall, the casino was added in 1994. Today the gaming area is about 290,000 square feet (27,000 square meters), and has about thousands of slot machines; it has been said to hold the most slot machines of any casino in the western United States. Poker and other gaming tables are available as well.

President Ronald Regan signed the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act into law in 1988. It was seen at the time as a way to generate income for Native Americans. There are three different classes of tribal gaming that cover gaming at tribal events, games of chance like bingo, and casino-style games.
