Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In a standard game of Texas Hold 'Em two cards are dealt to each player. Following a round of betting three cards are turned face up on the table that any player can use to help make his best hand. What is this part of the game called?

Answer: the flop

Texas Hold Em, originally just called "Holdem" dates back to the early 20th century as a variation of poker. But it didn't really catch on until it was played at the Golden Nugget Casino in Las Vegas in the late '60s. It has since become the most popular tournament game in poker.
2. The background of the numbers on a roulette wheel are in three different colors. What are they?

Answer: black, red and green

Only two of the numbers on a roulette wheel have a green background: zero and double zero. While a bet on either red, black, even or odd pays even money it is the presence of the two green numbers that gives the house an advantage.
3. In a game of Craps what are "boxcars"?

Answer: A roll of two sixes

Double sixes are also sometimes called "Midnight" because they add up to 12. The more common term "boxcars" refers to the resemblance to train tracks on the dice.
4. In the multi-state lottery game of "Powerball" how many numbers do you have to match to collect the progressive jackpot?

Answer: Five on the white balls plus one on the red Powerball

The Powerball jackpot is won by correctly selecting and matching 5 numbers out of 69 white balls and one Powerball number out of 26 red balls drawn separately. The balls are mechanically rotated in a machine similar to a Bingo machine.
5. What gambling game allows you, in some situations, to buy "insurance"?

Answer: Blackjack

In blackjack if the dealer's "upcard" is an ace a player has the option to buy "insurance", meaning that he is betting that the dealer's hole card is a ten or a face card which would give the dealer "blackjack" or 21. It pays 2 to 1 to the bettor in that case.
6. What is "Pai Gow"?

Answer: A variation of poker

While the name "Pai Gow" came from the Chinese card game often called "Chinese Dominoes" the American game was actually invented by Sam Torosian and Fred Wolf who was manager of the "Commerce Casino" in Commerce California. In Pai Gow poker seven cards are dealt face down. Of those seven a two card hand and a five card hand are chosen. The object is to beat the dealer's hands.
7. In most poker games each player puts an equal amount of money in the pot before the cards are dealt. What is the name for this opening bet?

Answer: The ante

The ante is usually used in draw poker or stud poker. In professional games of Texas Hold'em the ante is replaced by a "blind" bet which can either be called or raised just as in a regular round of betting.
8. In blackjack when are you permitted to "split" your hand?

Answer: When you are dealt a pair

A player has the option of splitting his hand and playing two hands when he is dealt a pair. This affords the opportunity for a double win, a double loss or a "push" (one hand wins, the other loses). Blackjack experts advise against splitting some pairs but according to some blackjack dealers I know most amateur players can't resist the opportunity to double their winnings.
9. In a game of Craps what is the person rolling the dice called?

Answer: the shooter

In the casino game of craps the shooter is usually encouraged by an employee known as the "stickman" who will call out the results of each roll. A good stickman will do so in a style resembling that of a carnival barker. He is called a stickman because he uses a curved stick to retrieve the dice after each roll and hand them back to the shooter.
10. In what country did the game "Baccarat" originate?

Answer: France

Baccarat originated in France in the 19th century. It is a high stakes played in casinos worldwide, but in Las Vegas and Atlantic City it is normally played in a room away from the main floor. The object, of course, is to beat the dealer's hand, but it differs significantly from blackjack in the way the point values of the cards are assigned and in the game play itself.
