Manitoba began ratings in 1911 solely in Winnipeg as no one else was showing films at that time. It wasn't until 1916 that the Manitoba Censor Board was established, and similar to the UK's ratings, there were only two. "General" was similar to the "G" rating in the US or the "U" rating in the UK, meaning everyone was admitted.

There was no restrictions on "adult" rated films, however, if the filmmaker could not censor the movie to the Board's specifications, the Board banned the film instead.

A third rating, "Restricted", was created in 1959, and was the first to have certain ages unable to view.

In the 1930's, the first classification system came about and were given as either "suitable for all" or "suitable for adult audiences." It wasn't until the 1980's that an actual rating was given.

The four-tier system of the 1980's were rated "F" for family viewing, "PG" for parental supervision, "AA" for accompaniment by adults, and "R" for restricted films.

The "PG" and "AA" ratings did not have specific age limits. In 2003, the Ontario Film Review Board moved to a five-tier system, changing "F" to "G" for general viewing and "AA" to "14A," which limited viewing to children 14 and older without parental consent, leaving "PG" and "R" as is, adding a new "18A" rating, which restricted viewing to age 18 and older without accompaniment.

The Office of Censorship of Moving Pictures was established in 1913. For the next fifty-four years, they were in control of any and all films shown in Quebec. The Office banned more than 7,000 films during this time, which was more than the UK, the US, and the rest of Canada combined. On June 14, 1967, with the passage of Bill 52, the Office of Censorship was dissolved, and the Supervisory Board of Cinema was established. For the next 16 years, the Board was responsible for approving movies for viewing by the public.

After the Film Act was enacted on June 23, 1983, the Regie du Cinema was established and began rating movies.

There was no set ratings system in Australia until the Australian government intervened and created the Australian Classification Board in 1970. They were responsible for rating and banning of movies, video games, and even literature. The MPAA began operations in 1968, and the BBFC (British version of ratings system) began in 1912.

Similar to what happened in the USA for the movies "Gremlins" and "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" in 1984, Australians had issues with a proper rating for "The Silence of the Lambs". Critics felt that "The Silence of the Lambs" was too violent for an "M" rating, but not strong enough to warrant an "R18+" rating, however, in Australia, the "MA15+" rating is a restricted rating, meaning that children under the age of 15 requires parental approval to view. "The Silence of the Lambs" was originally rated "R" in Australia, similar to the MPAA's "NC-17," but on appeal, was re-rated "M".

Australia's original ratings in 1970 when the Australian Classification Board rated movies were "G" for movies that anyone could sit down and watch, "NRC" was the rating that children were not recommended to watch, "M" for "mature audiences," and "R" for movies that were restricted to adults watching. Over time, the "NRC" rating changed to "PG" and the "R" rating was given an age limit and changed to "R18+." These ratings were similar to the MPAA original three ratings from 1968, except there was no "NRC" with the MPAA.

"Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III," which released January 12, 1990, was the last film to receive an "X" rating by the MPAA. It wasn't until September 27, 1990, about eight and a half months later, that the "NC-17" rating was established by the MPAA, becoming the "adult" rating that the MPAA's seal of approval was on.

The MPAA also never copyrighted the "X" rating. The movie "Henry and June", which released on October 5, 1990, was the first movie to receive the new rating.

"Batman" was originally planned to be rated "15" by the BBFC, and after pressure from the industry, the BBFC decided to shorten the gap between "PG" and "15" by adding a "12" rating, similar to the MPAA's "PG-13" rating added in July 1984. The "12" rating is still a restricted rating, however, and unlike the "PG-13" rating in the USA where there was no requirement to be age 13 to watch, with a "12" rated movie, the child must be at least 12 years old.

The "12A" rating began in 2002, and was only used in the theater.

The "Uc" rating was only used for direct-to-video movies. The "U" rating fell under the same umbrella, and since the "Uc" was extraneous, the BBFC decided to retire its use in 2009. The "PG-12" rating was on a trial period in Norwich for three months beginning in October 2001.

It was retired and became the "12A" rating used since 2002. The "A" rating had evolved over the years, and while it was an "adult" rating in 1912, it changed to something five year olds could watch, but was designed for children over 12 in 1970, then dropped altogether in 1982.
