Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As "Smackdown!" began on July 31, 2003, which patriotic superstar came down to the ring?

Answer: Kurt Angle

The newly-crowned WWE champion came to the ring to a huge ovation, and took some time to take it all in. He told the crowd how great it was to be champion just four months after having neck surgery performed on him. Kurt Angle had just won the WWE Championship at "Vengeance " 2003 by beating both Brock Lesnar and Big Show. Outside of pro wrestling, Angle won an Olympic gold medal for freestyle wrestling at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.
2. Did Vince McMahon grant Brock Lesnar's wishes for a WWE Championship match at the beginning of "Smackdown!" on July 31, 2003?

Answer: No

Brock Lesnar came to the ring and asked Kurt Angle for a title shot, because he believed he was entitled to a rematch as the former champion. Vince McMahon then came down to the ring and said that Lesnar would have to earn his title shot. He also said that Angle and Lesnar would team up in a match against the Big Show and a mystery opponent later in the night.
3. Against which member of the World's Greatest Tag Team did Rey Mysterio wrestle on the July 31, 2003 edition of "Smackdown!", Charlie Haas or Shelton Benjamin?

Answer: Shelton Benjamin

Rey Mysterio was the reigning WWE Cruiserweight champion at the time. However, he competed in a non-title match against Shelton Benjamin. Benjamin was accompanied to the ring by the other half of the self-titled World's Greatest Tag Team, Charlie Haas. Rey Mysterio, on the other hand, had Billy Kidman at ringside. Mysterio ultimately got the win after a "619" and a victory roll, while Haas and Kidman fought outside of the ring.
4. Fill in the blank: which gimmick wrestler did Chris Benoit have a match against on the July 31, 2003 edition of "Smackdown!", Doink the _______?

Answer: Clown

Chris Benoit thought he would be facing Rhyno, but Rhyno showed up on the TitanTron to tell him that he had a warm-up opponent for Benoit. It turned out to be Doink The Clown, a character who was originally portrayed by Matt Osborne but was played by many other wrestlers throughout the years. For this match, Nick Dinsmore (later known as Eugene) was behind the Doink costume. Benoit won the match with the "Crippler Crossface," and Rhyno told Benoit that the joke was on him. Rhyno then left the arena.
5. Which title was on the line in the match between Eddie Guerrero and Tajiri on the July 31, 2003 episode of "Smackdown!"?

Answer: United States Championship

Eddie Guerrero was the defending WWE United States Champion at the time of this "Smackdown!" taping. He was booked to wrestle in a title match against Tajiri. Guerrero made his way to the ring in a low rider. He tried to get it to bounce but he couldn't do it.

He then opened up the trunk and found that Tajiri was inside. Tajiri spit green mist in Eddie's face and then the match began. At one point, Tajiri attempted to spit green mist in Eddie's face again, but the referee got it instead. Eddie kicked Tajiri in the groin, hit him with the belt, and then finally gave him a "Frog Splash" for the win.
6. Against which superstar, also a tattoo artist, did Zach Gowen have a match on July 31, 2003 on "Smackdown!"?

Answer: Shannon Moore

Zach Gowen was able to have a pro wrestling career despite the fact that one of his legs was amputated when he was young. A capsule telling his story aired before the match. Moore came into the ring accompanied by Matt Hardy. Moore won the match when he rolled Zack up, after Zach was distracted by Hardy. Matt Hardy then pounded Zach after the match.

Shannon Moore, who was trained by Matt and Jeff Hardy, worked for WWE between 2001 and 2005, and then again between 2006 and 2008. He also owned a tattoo parlor and had many tattoos on his body too.
7. Who beat Orlando Jordan in a match on the July 31, 2003 episode of "Smackdown!", after losing to The Undertaker at "Vengeance" a few days earlier?

Answer: John Cena

John Cena had suffered an embarrassing defeat against The Undertaker at "Vengeance" 2003. However, Undertaker did suffer damage to his rib area during that match. Cena challenged Undertaker to a rematch before he fought Jordan. The actual match was pretty quick, and Cena had no issues in defeating Jordan.
8. Which of the following superstars was the only one NOT to appear in the segment of "Smackdown!" on July 31, 2003 that featured wrestlers having fun in a hotel?

Answer: Edge

After the match between Cena and Jordan, we got to see Torrie Wilson in a hotel room with Jamie Noble and Nidia. Torrie was drinking champagne even though she looked quite intoxicated already. Billy Gunn then came in and interrupted the fun.
9. Who walked into Mr. McMahon's office to demand a championship rematch during the July 31, 2003 episode of "Smackdown!"?

Answer: Brock Lesnar

Lesnar had an idea he wanted to run by Vince: a rematch for his WWE Championship. Lesnar argued that since he was told to earn his title shot earlier in the night, he was willing to go one-on-one against McMahon himself, and if he won, he would be granted the rematch. McMahon just said that he would take the matter under advisement.
10. Which superstar, later known as Lord Tensai, was revealed as Big Show's mystery partner for the main event Tag Team Match against the team of Lesnar and Angle?

Answer: A-Train

Angle and Lesnar were paired up and had to put their differences aside to fight the team of A-Train and Big Show. Late in the match, Lesnar gave Big Show the "F-5," and Kurt Angle tagged himself in and got the pinfall for the win. Lesnar wanted to be the one to pin the Big Show and wasn't happy with what Angle did.

They argued and Angle started to walk away, but Lesnar stopped him and gave him an "F-5" too. Vince McMahon then came out and told Lesnar that he would be in a Steel Cage Match against McMahon on the next episode of "Smackdown!", refereed by none other than Kurt Angle.

In the following weeks, "Smackdown!" viewers learned that this was all a ruse and McMahon teamed up with Lesnar, betraying Angle.
