Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the dirt area between the outfield grass and the home run wall called?

Answer: Warning track

The warning track was required and made part of the rules in the 1950s. The idea was for the outfielder to have a sense of where he is, and how far away from the wall he is. In the 1970s, padded outfield walls were added to the rule book and ballparks.
2. The home run king chain began with Babe Ruth in 1927 by hitting 60 home runs in the season. Yankee Roger Maris broke the Babe's record in 1961 by hitting 61. Along came Mark McGwire who hit 70 for the Cardinals in 1998. Who is next in line and broke McGwire's season home run record?

Answer: Barry Bonds

Bonds of the San Francisco Giants hit an amazing 73 home runs in 2001. For his efforts, Barry won his fourth of seven MVP Awards in his career. Barry broke into baseball with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986. He is the son of Bobby Bonds, and the godson of Willie Mays.
3. Who won the American League Cy Young award in 2008?

Answer: Cliff Lee

The others were all catchers in the season. Lee was in his seventh season as a Cleveland Indian in 2008. He went 22-3 with 170 strikeouts, and had a 2.54 ERA. Cliff beat Roy Halladay of the Blue Jays and Francisco Rodriguez of the Angels for the award.
4. With a runner on first and second base and nobody out, the batter hits a pop fly directly above the pitcher's mound. What does the umpire rule?

Answer: Infield fly rule, the batter is out

The infield fly rule occurs when runners are on first and second base, or with the bases loaded and there are less than two outs. The batter is automatically out, and the runners advance at their own risk of being thrown out. The rule was put in place since old-time baseball because an infielder would intentionally drop the pop fly, then try and get a double-play from it.
5. In the 2008 season, Joe Torre managed which team?

Answer: Los Angeles Dodgers

Torre once played for the Braves in the 1960s before becoming a manager. He managed the Mets, Braves, then Cardinals before taking over the Yankees for 12 seasons. In those 12 seasons, Joe and the Yankees made six World Series appearances. The Dodgers signed Torre prior to the 2008 season.
6. In 10 consecutive seasons, this team finished in last place nine times. In 2008, they went from worst to first and made it all the way to the World Series. Which team was this?

Answer: Tampa Bay

The Tampa Bay franchise began in 1998. The following 10 seasons would be embarrassing to the franchise and the fans. They helped erase the misery by winning the American League East Division and American League crown, then meeting the Phillies in the World Series. They would lose the series, four games to one.
7. When is a Major League runner allowed to 'lead off' a base?

Answer: Any time the ball is in play

As long as 'timeout' has not been called by an umpire, the runner can lead off the base any time they wish, but are at risk of being thrown out. Runners lead off a base in hopes of getting a jump when the ball is hit, or a chance to steal the next base. Runners are often 'picked off' the base that they were leading off.
8. Who was the first pitcher to win 500 career games?

Answer: Cy Young

Young's career began in 1890 with the National League's Cleveland Spiders. He would later play in the first-ever World Series in 1903 with the Boston Americans (later Red Sox). Denton True "Cyclone" Young won 511 games in his career, and was inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame in 1937. Young had the pitching Cy Young Award named in his honor one year after he died.

In 1956, the Cy Young Award was first presented to baseball's most outstanding pitcher in the season, Brooklyn Dodger Don Newcombe.
9. In of one baseball's more comical bloopers in 1993, outfielder Jose Canseco misjudged a flyball during a game. The ball hit him in the head and bounced over the fence. What did the umpire rule?

Answer: Home run

Canseco was a Texas Ranger on May 26, 1993. Carlos Martinez of the Cleveland Indians hit a ball deep to right field. Canseco had the ball hit him on the top of his head, then bounce into the bleachers. As long as the ball did not hit the ground, it is a home run once it clears the fence.

The home run by Martinez was off Ranger pitcher Kenny Rogers in the fourth inning. Cleveland ended up winning the game 7-6.
10. Which National League player won the Most Valuable Player Award in 2008?

Answer: Albert Pujols

The others were all American Leaguers in 2008. Pujols was in his eighth season with the St. Louis Cardinals. He hit 37 home runs, had 187 hits, and batted in 116 runs in the season. It was Albert's second MVP Award after winning his first in 2005. Pujols took 18 of the 32 first place votes, and won his second award over Ryan Howard of the Philadelphia Phillies.
