Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What kind of grass grows where the Once-ler lives?

Answer: Grickle Grass

Dr. Seuss describes grickle grass as a tall black grass that makes the same sound as its name. The wind is described as sour smelling and the only birds around are crows.
2. Why doesn't the Lorax live in the forest anymore?

Answer: The Lorax was lifted away when the trees disappeared.

After the Once-ler and his family cut down all the trees, the Lorax could no longer live there so he was lifted away into the sky. The Humming-fish had already found a new pond to swim in and the Brown Bar-ba-loots took off to find food because the truffle trees gave them the food they ate.
3. The only two parts of the Once-ler that are seen are his eyes and his arms. What color are his arms?

Answer: Green

The Once-ler's eyes are shown as he looks out the window of his home when the narrator asks him what happened to the Lorax. The Once-ler's arms are shown to be green. No other part of the Once-ler is ever seen.

Dr. Seuss made the Once-ler as the antagonist (villain) of the story and the Lorax as the protagonist (hero) of the story.
4. Even though the Once-ler is never fully seen, he tells the narrator what he makes his clothes from. What material does the Once-ler use to make his clothes?

Answer: Miff Muffered Moof

The town was once a pretty place to live before the Once-ler moved there. The grass was green, the water was full of fish, and the sky was blue. When the Once-ler arrived, he built a house and lived in the top part. He made his clothes out of miff muffered moof, which was a combination of material from a dog and a cow.

The Lerkim is the house that the Once-ler lives in. The other guesses are words from different Dr. Seuss books.
5. What month will the Once-ler tell the story of the Lorax?

Answer: August

The Once-ler will open the shades just enough to peak outside and tell whoever wants to know about the story of the Lorax, beginning with how the Once-ler came to live there. He charges an old nail, fifteen cents and the shell of a great-great-great grandfather snail.
6. In the Once-ler's tale of the Lorax, where did the Lorax first appear to the Once-ler?

Answer: On a Truffula tree stump

The Once-ler was using the tufts of the Truffula tree to make thneeds. After the Once-ler chopped down a Truffula tree to make his thneeds out of the Truffula tufts, the Lorax appeared on the stump.
7. When the Lorax spoke to the Once-ler, it said, "I am the Lorax. I speak for the _____". What is the missing word?

Answer: Trees

When the Once-ler saw the Lorax for the first time on a stump of a Truffula tree he had cut down, the Lorax was brown and had a yellow mustache. The Once-ler described the Lorax as looking old and mossy with a squeaky voice. The Lorax told the Once-ler that he spoke for the trees because the trees had no tongues.
8. When the Once-ler sold his thneed that he had made out of the truffla tree tuft, he called the rest of his family to help him cut down the trees and knit the thneeds.

Answer: True

After the Once-ler sold his thneed for $3.98, he realized he could sell more so he called his family for help. Together, they built factories and cut all the truffula trees down so they could use the colorful tufts to make the thneeds. When the last truffula tree had been cut down, the family left the Once-ler because there was no way to make thneeds and no money to be made.
9. After the Lorax disappeared, what word did the Lorax leave in his place on the tree stump?

Answer: Unless

With no trees left, the Once-ler's family left because there was no more money coming to them. The animals left to find a better place to live so the Lorax disappeared into the smoggy sky. After he was gone, the Once-ler noticed the word 'Unless' written on the stump where the Lorax first appeared.
10. After finishing his story, what did the Once-ler give the narrator to help the land that he destroyed?

Answer: Truffula tree seed

The Once-ler had a single truffula tree seed that he gave to the narrator after realizing what the Lorax meant when he wrote 'unless' on the tree stump.

"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, Nothing is going to get better. It's not."
