Goodnight Moon Trivia Quiz

"Goodnight Moon" by Margaret Wise Brown was a favorite of the original author of this quiz. I've adopted this quiz and added some interesting information. I chose this quiz because the book was also a favorite in our house.

1. What kind of animal is going to sleep in "Goodnight Moon"?

Answer: bunny

There is a little bunny tucked in his bed and ready to go to sleep. The story is a description of the little bunny's bedtime ritual of saying goodnight to a number of different objects before going to sleep.
2. What color is the room?

Answer: green

The walls of the room are green. There are yellow and green striped curtains and the blanket is also green. The book pages alternated between color and black and white. This was a common way to save costs at the time.
3. Complete this line from the book: "There is a picture of...."

Answer: the cow jumping over the moon

The nursery rhyme "Hey Diddle Diddle" is one of the references in the book, along with the book "The Runaway Bunny" and "Goldilocks and the Three Bears". There is a picture of the cow jumping over the moon in the book, but the cow's udder is blurred out so as to avoid offending anyone.
4. How many kittens were there?

Answer: 2

There were two little kittens and a pair of mittens. Other objects and animals in the room include a toy house, a mouse, a comb, brush and a red balloon. The sleepy little guy takes care to say goodnight to all the objects and animals in the room before settling down to sleep.
5. What does the quiet old lady do?

Answer: whispers 'hush'

The quiet old lady who is sitting on a rocking chair with knitting in her lap whispers hush. The young animal is in the same room as the old lady and the scene is calming and tranquil. Writer and child expert Ellen Handler Spitz writes that the book helps young children understand that "life can be trusted, that life has stability, reliability, and durability."
6. What little animal is in every picture of the room?

Answer: mouse

There is a little mouse in every picture but the mouse moves around from place to place. He can be seen peering over a bookcase, in front of the fireplace and underneath the window. Don't worry, he gets a goodnight as well.
7. What comes next in this list? "Goodnight comb, goodnight brush, goodnight nobody, goodnight....?"

Answer: mush

As the little guy takes his time to say goodnight to everything around him, one of the things he says goodnight to is the bowl of mush. The mush is left untouched....not a surprise given that it's described as cornmeal pudding boiled in water or milk.
8. The book begins at 7pm and ends at what time?

Answer: 8:10pm

The book begins at 7pm and moves in ten minute intervals through the pages. The book ends at 8:10pm demonstrating that it takes the little animal one hour and ten minutes to move through his bedtime ritual of saying goodnight. There are two clocks in the room that show the time.
9. There is a picture in the room of a rabbit who is doing what activity?

Answer: Fishing

There are three pictures in total in the room and one of them is of a rabbit who is fishing. This picture is a reference to another of the authors books, "The Runaway Bunny." The picture can be seen opposite the bed and the rabbit is fly fishing using a carrot as bait.
10. The book ends with the following line, can you fill in the blank? "Goodnight ______ everywhere."

Answer: noises

This very popular book ends with the sleepy little guy saying goodnight to the objects around him, to the old lady, and finally to all the noises everywhere. In the first part of the book, the objects are listed and in the latter part, he says goodnight to them. The word noises is not listed in the first part of the book, the word noises is added only in the last line.
