Fishing Trivia Questions

1. Have you ever heard of a "Goonch"? I hadn't, until I came across a monster specimen weighing in at 75 kg. It was caught by the host of the National Geographic Channel show "Fish Warrior" - who is he?

From Quiz
Bigger Fish

Answer: Jakub Vágner

A goonch is also known as a devil catfish, with the scientific name Bagarius bagarius. The record setting goonch was caught in 2009, in the River Ramganga in India. It measured 1.57 metres long! Jakub holds several other fishy records, and is a passionate proponent of catch and release. The catch was verified, and the record awarded by the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) Somewhat gruesomely, there are accounts of goonch eating human corpses from religious pyres along the Kali river in the Himalayas.

2. This technique is called Noodling, and this way of catching catfish is used in the southern United States. Which piece of equipment is used to grab these massive critters from their caves in this technique?

From Quiz Fishing Galore!

Answer: Bare Hands

This method requires nothing but your bare hands to grab those suckers. It can be done solo or in pairs, with one person diving into the freshwater habitat of the catfish and placing their hand in the catfish hole. What comes next is simple, the catfish should come out and latch onto the noodler's hand in defense, and the noodler will drag it out and swim back to the surface with his/her catch. This technique is risky, but reward is high as the average weight of these catfishes is about 40 lbs or 18 kg. While experienced noodlers can do this bare handed, it is very dangerous as it will lead to cuts or infection from the biting catfish, so it is advised to wear protective gloves like chain mail to prevent and damage. You also need to be a very strong and confident swimmer, as the fish can be strong enough to prevent you from reaching the surface if they are too heavy.

3. Which fish is the best bait for catching barracuda?

From Quiz Barracuda Fishing

Answer: Ballyhoo

The ballyhoo is the best bait for barracuda fishing because it has flashy silver sides.

4. Which fish has sharp teeth, lives around reefs, can reach 50 lbs and is a ferocious fighter, but tires out somewhat quickly?

From Quiz Saltwater Fishing

Answer: Barracuda

Shark have sharp teeth but they don't tire as quickly as a big barracuda of the same weight. Jack don't have sharp teeth but still hold the record for the most rod breaking. And the only snapper big enough to to fit the bill is the cubera snapper which can grow over 100 lbs and won't tire out quickly.

5. Which lake complex in Northamptonshire is the site of Kingfisher Lake, home to Benson for the last 14 years of her life?

From Quiz One Fish, Two Fish

Answer: Bluebell Lakes

There are five lakes in total at Bluebell Lakes, and they are all what are known as "day ticket" waters which means they are open to casual anglers. People can just turn up and buy admission to fish for one day without needing to be members or make any other commitment. Benson was very unusual in being such a large fish in 'day ticket' waters. Other fish of her calibre tend to be kept in club waters, and some of them actually have long waiting lists for membership and fishing peg slots.

15. Why would an experienced underwater hunter often choose 'free-diving' over Scuba diving?

From Quiz Spearfishing

Answer: All these are valid reasons

An experienced spearfishing diver will often choose free diving over Scuba diving for many reasons. Most fish will become alerted and enter a cautious phase when they feel and hear the bubbles that are expelled from a Scuba divers regulator during the process of exhaling. Another advantage that free divers hold over Scuba divers in the hunting world is in the fact that they can remain in´the water for a long time without having to exit for bottle swaps or lengthy off gassing sessions. Its also true that both spearfishing and Scuba diving are gear intensive sports, and mixing these two sports will often result in a very encumbering experience to say the least. Above all the technical advantages, spear fisherman choose free-diving because of the challenge, achieving the mental and physical abilities to remain submerged underwater for minutes at a time without the aide of a breathing apparatus is sometimes more rewarding than landing a large fish.

16. Given longlines, fish come close to the surface, and they need to be held up by something. What is the common term used by fisherman?

23. When the fly line is being picked up off the water and whizzing behind you loading the rod for your power stroke (forward cast), what is this part of the cast called?

From Quiz Casting the Fly Rod

Answer: Back cast

The person using the fly rod must watch their back cast, if you are casting to a fish 20 feet in front of you, you'll need at least 20 feet of clear space behind you too. This is why it's hard to fly fish in a crowded space. Without enough back space, the fly line will snag on branches, bushes, people, passing cars or whatever is behind you.

24. What is the line called that connects the fly line to the reel?

From Quiz All About Fly Rods

Answer: Backing

The backing is made of braided dacron of around 20 to 35 pound test and it does two jobs. First, to take up the space between the bottom of the reel and the bottom of the fly line. 27. What was the weight of the heaviest barracuda caught in the twentieth century?

From Quiz Barracuda Fishing

From Quiz One Fish, Two Fish

Answer: Uncooked tiger nuts

A quantity of uncooked tiger nuts was found on the lakeshore, and several empty packets were also found in a trashcan nearby. When a fish eats raw tiger nuts, they can swell up inside its stomach, and in sufficient quantity can cause illness and death. The finding of the nuts and packaging led people to believe that an inexperienced angler had perhaps inadvertently poisoned Benson, or even that she had been deliberately killed.
