Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. kitten with a red bow
Answer: Hello Kitty
Hello Kitty (formally Kitty White) is a white female Japanese Bobtail kitten, sporting a red bow on her left ear. Her first appearance in the world was in November of 1974 - and she has aged differently in various subsequent appearances. In 'Hello Kitty and Friends', which originally aired from 1989 until 1998, she is in third grade. The show is centered on her, along with her family, friends and pets, as the title suggests. She is shown to be confident and friendly, capable of doing pretty much anything she decides to attempt.
The Dutch artist Dick Bruna has suggested that Hello Kitty is an imitation of his famous anthropomorphic rabbit, Miffy. The subsequent suit was settled out of court.
In the series Karen Bernstein provided the voice of Hello Kitty.
2. kitten with a yellow bow
Answer: Mimmy
Mimmy, Hello Kitty's slightly younger twin sister, can be identified by the fact that she wears a yellow bow in her left ear. The twins are very close, and usually appear together. She is much shyer than her sister, but (as shown in the episode 'The Wonderful Sisters') a much better baker. She also enjoys sewing and is portrayed as more of a traditional 'girly' girl than her tomboyish twin.
Mimmy's voice in the show was provided by Mary Long.
3. white lamb
Answer: Fifi
After making her first appearance in the episode 'The Circus Comes to Town', Fifi became one of Hello Kitty's best friends. She is an anthropomorphic white lamb with a tuft of yellow fleece on her head. The flower she sports near her left ear is officially described as a holly flower. As revealed in 'The Dream thief', she wants to be a police officer when she grows up.
The voice of Fifi was provided by Jill Frappier.
4. frog
Answer: Keroppi
Keroppi is officially described a green, but to my eye it's a very yellowish green. He features in his own world ('Keroppi and Friends'), but he and his family make regular appearances in the Hello Kitty stories. He lives in a house near Donut Pond with his family (his fellow-triplets Pikki, a girl, and Koroppi, father Keroppa and mother Keroma). Among his frog friends who also make appearances are Keroleen (his girlfriend), Ganta/Junk (the largest frog, who can turn into a rock as necessary), Kyrosuke/Soak (who can see things far off, especially when he jumps out of the water) and Noberun/Newton (scientific type, known as an excellent weather forecaster).
Like Fifi, Keroppi was voiced by Jill Frappier.
5. snail
Answer: Den Den
Den Den, a brown snail with a blue shell and eyes as big as his head, is one of Keroppi's best friends. He is usually seen trying to catch up with the others, when he is not lying around daydreaming or out playing in the rain.
Den Den is another character whose voice was supplied by Jill Frappier.
6. sunshine doll
Answer: Teru Teru/Ruby
As is the case for a number of characters, the North American version of the show gave Teru Teru an English name (Ruby), so her name is usually shown with the Japanese name first, followed after a slash by the English version. A teru teru is a traditional Japanese doll (sunshine doll) that looks somewhat like a traditional Halloween ghost costume, with a spherical head separated from a flowing sheetlike body be a string tied around its neck.
This particular sunshine doll predicts the weather with incredible accuracy, wears a red bow in her hair, and loves to collect ribbons. Her voice in the series came from Nadine Rabinovitch.
7. duck
Answer: Pekkle
Pekkle is a white boy duck, with a T-shirt that is usually blue. He loves to tap dance, often doing so as his friend Pitch (a fish who is also his swimming coach) claps out a rhythm. His younger brother is called Pickle.
The voice of Pekkle was provided by Susan Roman.
8. bear cub
Answer: Thomas
Thomas is a brown bear, with a pale muzzle and red patches on his cheeks and inside his ears, sporting a red scarf around his neck. He made his first appearance in 'The Circus comes to Town', and it is revealed in 'The Dream Thief' that his dream is to be a superhero - but when he flies through the scene of the combined dreams after Puffin returns them all, he causes chaos.
Thomas was voiced by Paulina Gillis.
9. raccoon
Answer: Tracy
Most raccoons are black and white, but Tracy is brown, with light brown markings and stripes on his tail. He and Thomas accompany Hello Kitty to Greenwald Park, where she rescues Prince Edwin, in 'The Prince in his Dream Castle'. In 'The Dream Thief' we see that his stolen dream was to be a great baker; in the mashup of all the children's dreams, his cake gets in the way of Mimmy's painting.
The voice for Tracy was provided by Paulina Gillis.
10. dog
Answer: Jody
Jody is a brown boy dog in Hello Kitty's class, as seen in 'The Dream Thief', where his dream involved being a famous scientist receiving a Nobel prize. When everyone's dreams are recombined, he interrupts Kitty's concert performance, claiming that it is really his dream and he has an acceptance speech to deliver. Then Thomas flies in.
