Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This series started during World War II in the hopes of enticing young women into the nursing profession. When the war ended the books were steered more toward the mystery element, and the final title, published in 1968, was "[Name] Ski Nurse Mystery". What name appeared in that title?

Answer: Cherry Ames

Like many other fictional characters, despite the huge time gap between first publication, 1943, and last, 1968, Cherry never seemed to age. Since the books were aimed at kids there wasn't a lot of detail as to exactly what being a nurse entailed, but her profession did manage to take her all over the country and sometimes even further.

As a nurse, she worked a myriad of places, including a dude ranch, a boarding school, and a department store.
2. This girls' series character, interested in art, has a twin sister, and each title contains a color, such as "The Clue in Blue", "The Riddle in Red", and "The Silver Secret". Who is she?

Answer: Connie Blair

During the series, Connie Blair takes part in a modeling event, attends art school, and works at an advertising agency in Philadelphia, all of which take her on adventures and lead her to mysteries that she invariably solves. Her twin sister's name is Kit, and she also has a younger brother, Toby.

Her Aunt Bet, with a connection to the fashion industry, has a big effect on her life and, at one point, Connie shares her apartment in Philadelphia.
3. In "Trixie Belden, The Red Trailer Mystery", who was stealing shiny or colorful objects, including a locket from Mrs. Smith?

Answer: Jimmy the Crow

Jimmy the Crow had everything stashed in a crow's nest in a walnut tree. Until Trixie discovered his hoard she suspected one of the Darnells (possibly Mrs. Darnell) had stolen the locket, because they knew Mr. Darnell had "borrowed" the red trailer from Di Lynch's father.

But when Mr. Lynch found out it was Darnell who had taken the trailer he called off the search for the "stolen" trailer, because he knew Darnell and found out about all the financial troubles he was having. Mrs. Smith calls Jimmy a pest, but it's obvious she treats him as a pet.
4. What was the title of the last book published in the Trixie Belden series?

Answer: Mystery of the Galloping Ghost

Trixie Belden and her brothers and friends, collectively known as the Bob-Whites, had a good, long run. The first six books were written by Julie Campbell, but even now there is some "mystery" about which authors wrote which books published under the pen name Kathryn Kenny. Trixie, like many other teen detectives, plans to become a private detective when she grows up, and already has a name picked out-The Belden-Wheeler Detective Agency, because, of course, best friend Honey Wheeler will be there, no matter how frightened she may be.
5. Which character(s) had a book set during the Chicago World's Fair, which Grosset and Dunlap, after buying the series, did not republish?

Answer: Beverly Gray

Setting the book at a specific event, which occurred at a specific time, made the book harder to appeal to a later audience that might think it dated. Or so the publishers at Grosset and Dunlap thought. This title was eventually released as a limited reprint in 2003, but even that is difficult to find.
6. Robin Kane is a young teenage detective who lives in California, and the locale often plays a big role in her mysteries. Another series with only a limited number of originals (six), the teen detective's best friend's father is a movie director and producer who owns both a mansion and a ranch. What is the name of the ranch?

Answer: Rancho Lucia

Robin's best friend, Mindy, Robin's brother, Kevin, and Mindy's brother, Michael, all spend a great deal of time at the ranch, where Robin's horse, a palomino named Nugget, is kept. Robin and Kevin have a younger sister, nicknamed Sugar, whose best friend, Judy, had been afflicted with polio.

They also live very near the ocean and surf, scuba dive, and swim there, as well as living close enough to San Francisco to easily make trips there.
7. This series' stories were all (according to the author) based on real-life incidents. In it, the main character married, her grandmother died and left her a home, and she and her husband took over the care of a young girl for a time. What series was this?

Answer: Judy Bolton

There were thirty-eight original Judy Bolton titles, all written by Margaret Sutton, published from 1932 to 1967. Judy doesn't age thirty-some years through the books but she does graduate high school, get engaged, get married; her friends age as well, and Judy even has one of her friend's children named after her. Peter Dobbs, whom she marries, goes from lawyer to FBI agent along the way.

Her brother, Horace, is a newspaper reporter. She has a cat named Blackberry.
8. Brains Benton was obviously the brains of the duo comprising a teen detective agency, but who was his partner?

Answer: Jimmy Carson

The two of them are the Benton and Carson International Detective Agency. Brains' real first name is Barclay. The original series only consists of six titles, published between 1959 and 1961. At times Jimmy is less than enamored of Brains' superior attitude, but he has to admit that he usually knows what he is talking about.
9. The Three Investigators work out of what interesting location?

Answer: A junkyard

The Three Investigators (Jupiter Jones, Bob Andrews and Pete Crenshaw) actually have their headquarters in an old mobile home in the junkyard, which is owned by Jupiter's Uncle Titus and Aunt Mathilda. It is well-hidden and has secret entrances that the boys use to come and go.

They live in Rocky Beach, California, and are more "official" than teen detectives usually are, as they have their own business cards identifying them as The Three Investigators, which sometimes impresses people, and sometimes doesn't.
10. Vicki Barr is a stewardess who flies all over the world and, of course, often solves mysteries. She and some of her fellow-stewardesses share an apartment when they aren't off on a flight. What city is this apartment located in?

Answer: New York City

In addition to being a stewardess, Vicki herself becomes a licensed pilot. Her family lives in Illinois and she has a younger sister who looks up to Vicki. The titles were written by two well-known series authors, Julie Campbell Tatham and Helen Wells, who have numerous other novels to their names.

Helen Wells and Julie Campbell Tatham both wrote some of the Cherry Ames titles, and Julie Campbell (Tatham) also started the Trixie Belden series.
