Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What are the names of the titular sleuths known as the Hardy Boys?

Answer: Frank and Joe

Frank and Joe Hardy are brothers who solve mysteries in their town of Bayport. They are amateur sleuths who like to solve cases the police and professional detectives cannot solve. They first appeared in the 1927 case "The Tower Treasure". All books in the series are written under the pen name Franklin W. Dixon.

The Hardy Boys have appeared in various book series and have had their older novels revised for the present day. Their personalities also change to fit the time.
2. "The Secret of the Old Clock" and "The Hidden Staircase" were the first two novels featuring which girl detective, created by Carolyn Keene?

Answer: Nancy Drew

Nancy Drew is generally seen as the girl equivalent to the Hardy Boys. Nancy even appeared in some crossover books with the Hardy Boys. She too was a teenage amateur sleuth who investigated the people in her town and the happenings there. In addition to the novels, Nancy Drew is also the main character in a popular series of PC games.
3. What are the names of the Boxcar Children who appear in a series of novels by Gertrude C. Warner?

Answer: Henry, Jessie, Violet and Benny

The Boxcar Children are Henry, Jessie, Violet and Benny Alden. They were orphaned at a young age and lived in a train car (hence the name boxcar) until they were taken in by their wealthy grandfather. The children solve a series of minor mysteries in their local neighborhood and other places.

The original novels are set in the 1920s and 1930s but many have been rewritten to be set in the 21st century.
4. In the Sammy Keyes mystery series by Wendelin Van Draanen, is Sammy a boy or a girl?

Answer: Girl

Sammy is short for Samantha. She is, at the start of the series, in seventh grade, and lives with her grandmother while her mother is pursuing an acting career. Sammy spends much of her time solving mysteries she happens to come across. She is very adventurous and plays softball. She first appeared in the novel "Sammy Keyes and the Hotel Thief" in 1997.
5. The Bailey School Kids, third graders who think some adults are supernatural creatures, consist of Howie, Melody, Liza and which other?

Answer: Eddie

The four Bailey School Kids are Howie, Melody, Liza and Eddie. Howie is the smart one, Melody is the adventurous one, Liza is the nice one and Eddie is the funny one. The four are third graders in Bailey City. They often meet adults who at least one of the group suspects may be a supernatural creature.

In their first appearance, "Vampires Don't Wear Polka Dots", the children believe their teacher Mrs. Jeepers may be a vampire. They were created by Debbie Dadey and Marcia Thornton-Jones.
6. In the mystery series "Basil of Baker Street", what kind of animal is Basil?

Answer: Mouse

Basil is a mouse detective who lives in the same building as Sherlock Holmes. Basil acts very much like Sherlock Holmes does, including solving mysteries and playing the violin. Basil appeared in five mystery novels written by Eve Titus. These books were also turned into the Disney film "The Great Mouse Detective".
7. In Donald J. Sobol's mystery books, by what nickname is the boy detective Leroy Brown better known?

Answer: Encyclopedia

Leroy Brown got his name because he is very smart and has a lot of knowledge like an encyclopedia. Encyclopedia Brown lives in Idaville where his father is the police chief. Together with Encyclopedia's friend Sally Kimball, the three usually solve the mystery. The books in this series are usually made up of short stories that are connected in some way.
8. Based on the board game, which children's mystery series includes characters such as Mrs. White and Professor Plum?

Answer: Clue

In the 1990s, a series of "Clue" novels for children were written by various authors. Each novel contained about ten or so short mysteries. Unlike the board game, the mysteries did not usually involve murder except for the last mystery. In the last mystery someone would attempt to kill Mr. Boddy only for him to survive in a rather bizarre way.
9. In which classic kid's mystery novel, written by Ellen Raskin, do pairs of heirs try to solve the mystery of a will to collect an inheritance?

Answer: The Westing Game

"The Westing Game" is considered to be one the classics in children's mystery novels. The main character is a young girl named Turtle who has disinterested parents. Turtle is very friendly and lives in Sunset Apartments with the other heirs. After Samuel Westing dies in mysterious circumstances, the heirs are divided into pairs to solve a mystery and collect the fortune. Each pair receives a different word clue and $10,000 for spending expenses.
10. A creation of John Grisham, Theodore Boone is a teenage detective who wants to be what when he grows up?

Answer: Lawyer

John Grisham is known for his adult novels featuring lawyers. In 2010, Grisham debuted Theodore Boone in novel "Kid Lawyer". Theodore is thirteen years old and both his parents are lawyers. He is very independent and often helps his classmates with legal issues (often trivial) they might have.
