Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bernie

Answer: Saint Bernard dog

The name should have given you a hint as Bernie is the short version of the name Bernard. Saint Bernards are big dogs which originated in Switzerland.

This Beanie Baby was released on 1 January 1997 and retired in September 1998.
2. Zip

Answer: Black cat

There were a few Beanie Babies called Zip, but they were all black cats. The markings changed a little, though, with some versions having white faces with pink whiskers while others were black with white paws.

All of these cats were around in the 1990s.
3. Goochy

The Beanie Baby was on the market from 1 January 1999 and was retired on 23 December the same year.
4. Scoop

Answer: Pelican

As I'm sure you know, pelicans have big beaks to scoop up fish to eat, so that's why the pelican Beanie Baby was given this name. it has a dark blue body with an orange bill and feet. You probably won't be surprised to hear that wild pelicans aren't blue - they have white or brown feathers.

Scoop was available from June 1996 until the very end of 1998.
5. Nuts

Answer: Squirrel

Squirrels are known for liking nuts, so the Beanie Baby in the shape of a squirrel was called by this name. It had a brown body, a bushy brown tail and a cream coloured tummy. Real squirrels are usually grey or red.

Nuts first came out in January 1997 and was available for exactly two years.
6. GiGi

Answer: Black poodle

The Beanie Baby GiGi was a black poodle dog with the curly hair which real poodles have. The poodle had red ribbons on its ears.

GiGi was around from the end of May 1998 until December 1999.
7. Whisper

Answer: Deer

This Beanie Baby is a medium brown colour with white spots and darker brown feet (hooves). She has a cream coloured chest.

Whisper was available from May 1998 and withdrawn in December 1999.
8. Fleece

Answer: Lamb

The name should have helped you pick out the baby sheep from the options. Fleece was white in colour with a few touches of peach inside the ears and on the nose. A later version was called Lullaby, but wasn't available until the 2000s.

Fleece was available for exactly two years, from l January 1997 until 3l December 1998.
9. Rocket

Answer: Blue jay

Unsurprisingly, Rocket was mainly blue with a white face and tummy. The beak and feet were both black.

Rocket was available from May 1996 until December 1999.
10. Sly

Answer: Fox

There is a common expression - 'sly as a fox' - which may have helped you pick this one. Sly is a brown coloured Beanie Baby with white around its neck and inside the ears, and a white tummy. It does have a bushy tail but no white tip, which a real fox would have. An earlier version, with a brown belly, came out briefly but was only available for six weeks in 1996.

The main version of Sly was available from August 1996 until September 1998.
