6. The Prince's Palace of Monaco is sometimes dubbed the Pink Palace. Do you know the surname of Monaco's Royal Family, who reside there?

From Quiz It Tickled Me Pink

Answer: Grimaldi

The Prince's Palace of Monaco was originally a fortress from 1191. It was captured by the Grimaldis, an aristocratic Genoan family, in 1297 and a royal palace was later built around the original fort. When Prince Rainier III succeeded his grandfather Prince Louis II in 1949, the palace was falling into a state of disrepair. Prince Rainier was responsible for initiating the vast renovation work to transform the palace into the spectacular royal residence it is today. Parts of the palace are open to the public and it is one of Monaco's most popular tourist attractions. Other attractions include the Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix each year, one of the most important dates on the motor racing calendar. The Principality is also home to the world-famous Monte Carlo Casino.

7. The word 'pink' was named after a plant of the same name that had petals with pretty frilled edges. What main occupation today uses hand held blades called pinking shears that give the same effect?

From Quiz In the Pink

Answer: Dressmakers

Pinking shears are hand-held scissors with the blade edges made in a sawtooth pattern - a little like the teeth of shark. They are used to give a zig-zag effect along the edges of materials when cutting, to stop the material from fraying. It's a handy little shortcut to use instead of hemming or seaming.

The British SAS used their "Pink Panther" Land Rovers in the desert from 1960 up until the 1980s. They were said to be a highly effective camouflage scheme for desert warfare. The Pink Panthers took their name from the "Pink Panther" films, featuring Peter Sellers as Inspector Jacques Clouseau. Land Rovers were first developed in the UK for farmers, as a tough 4 x 4 vehicle that could be used around farms, powering certain machines. It was soon discovered that they had a wide variety of other uses - including military use - and are sold globally thanks to their tough but simple design, making them excellent vehicles for use in rough terrain.

From Quiz It Tickled Me Pink

The animation was by noted English cartoonist Gerald Scarfe, widely known for his satirical caricatures, the first of which were frequently published in 'Private Eye' magazine.

13. It wasn't until around the 1920s that the colour pink was assigned to a specific gender. Which gender was that?

From Quiz In the Pink

Answer: Boys

I bet you were surprised to learn that. So was I. Here is a direct quote from the June 1918 Ladies Home Journal relating to this: "The generally accepted rule is pink for the boys and blue for the girls. The reason is that pink, being a more decided and stronger color, is more suitable for the boy, while blue, which is more delicate and dainty, is prettier for the girl". So fellas, ignore all the guffaws from the women, you can all get out in pink shirts and jeans from now on if you wish - and cite historical precedent. The switch in colour assignment came about in the 1940s, and from that time pink was assigned to girls and blue to boys.

It ran for six weeks only before being pulled. Pink Lady still enjoy successful careers in Japan, and Jeff Altman has had countless minor roles, mainly in television (e.g. as Hughie Hogg in four episodes of "The Dukes of Hazzard") with a few films ("Highlander II", "American Hot Wax", "Soul Man" and "Easy Money").

From Quiz It Tickled Me Pink

From 1979 the company underwent a global expansion which saw its sales rocket and it is now available worldwide.

18. In Japan, what content is featured in the local film genre known as Pink Movies?

From Quiz In the Pink

Answer: Pornography

How charming is that? An excellent way to besmirch a beautiful colour, I think. The reason for this dubious classification in a country otherwise known for its dedication to beauty is that the colour cherry blossom pink is associated with various parts of the female anatomy.

19. In the first movie of the series starring Peter Sellers, who or what is the "Pink Panther"?

From Quiz In The Pink

Answer: a flawed diamond

The diamond had a colour flaw, which upon magnification and a specific illumination, supposedly looked somewhat like a leaping panther. David Niven's character name was Sir Charles Lytton, a debonair cat burglar who intended to steal the diamond. His criminal alias was "The Phantom". While a pink Cadillac is definitely a "gem", one did not make an appearance in the movie. Many people seem to think the Pink Panther is the Clouseau character, but that is not the case in the original plot.

20. Which alcoholic drink is the main component for the classic 1930s-40s Pink Lady cocktail?

From Quiz Find the (Pink) Lady

Some modern Pink Lady cocktails are based on white rum with creme de cassis, others are vodka-based.

21. Everybody with a garden has at least one object that catches your eye. What fanciful lawn ornament did Don Featherstone create in 1957?

From Quiz There's Something About Pink

Answer: Pink Flamingos

Don Featherstone was a classically trained artist when a friend asked him to help design a three dimensional ornament, instead of a flat ornament. So, in a way, he laid the groundwork for gnomes, fairies, geese and all manner of yard displays. Prior to creating the flamingo, he had been asked to design a duck, and he felt the best way to replicate it would be to buy one, and then released it after he completed his design. When asked to design the flamingo, he realized he couldn't buy one, so used National Geographic photographs. Rather successfully, I might add. He passed away in June, 2015 at the age of 79. He lived to see his creations become a ubiquitous fixture worldwide, a symbol of kitsch and campiness.

22. In which river system would you find pink dolphins?

From Quiz All Things Pink

Among several nominations and awards during his long and successful career he won a total of four Oscars and 20 Grammys. Henry Mancini died in Los Angeles in 1994.

24. What animal, revered in the area of southeast Asia, is naturally pink in colour?

From Quiz In the Pink

Answer: White elephant

Jumbo it is. This elephant is very rare with a skin that is a very pale reddish tint, which turns pink when wet. Even its eyelashes and toenails are very pale in colour. They're all officially classed as white, however. Oh well, why not? The white elephant is usually considered a symbol of royal power in this area of the world. If a king wanted to bankrupt a rival or an enemy, it was said that he gave this person or persons a gift of a white elephant. These animals cannot work to bring in an income and they need a lot of care and attention - hence the resulting bankruptcy. How diabolically clever is that! There are echoes of this in the west, where, if something is referred to as a white elephant, it is considered to be more trouble than it is worth.

25. What organization was nicknamed "The Pinks" by criminals in the late 1800s?

From Quiz In The Pink

Answer: Pinkerton Detective Agency

The Pinkerton Detective Agency was formed by Allan Pinkerton in 1852. Above their motto "We Never Sleep" was a graphic logo of "the all seeing eye", which gave rise to the term "private eye". Pinkerton agents were hired to track down many "infamous" outlaws of the time, including Frank/Jesse James, the Wild Bunch and Butch Cassidy/The Sundance Kid. Much of Pinkerton's methodology was adopted by the FBI when it was first formed. The nickname of the London Metropolitan Police is "Scotland Yard". It is also called "the Met", to differentiate it from the other two police services that operate in the London area. FBI agents are called "G-Men" (short for "Government Men"), a nickname supposedly coined by the gangster "Machine Gun" Kelly circa 1933. Members of the R.C.M.P. are called "Mounties". Their dress uniforms are scarlet, not pink.

26. Another kind of Pink Lady cocktail is found in medicine. Which condition is it used to treat?

From Quiz Find the (Pink) Lady

Answer: Gastro-oesophageal reflux

Gastro-oesophageal reflux is the medical term for the condition in which the muscular ring (sphincter) at the lower end of the gullet (oesophagus) is over-relaxed, allowing stomach acid to flow back (reflux) up the oesophagus. It is very common and is the most frequent cause of indigestion in the UK, often resulting in the condition we know as "heartburn". The Pink Lady gastro-intestinal cocktail, named because of its colour, is used to treat the symptoms and usually consists of a liquid antacid plus a local anaesthetic.

27. A pink Chanel suit is a vivid image from a very sad day in US history. Why?

From Quiz There's Something About Pink

Answer: It was worn by Jackie Kennedy the day John Fitzgerald Kennedy, US president, was assassinated on November 22, 1963.

All these events were undeniably sad, but the only one in which a pink Chanel suit played a part was the assassination of JFK in Dallas, Texas. Iconic film show Jackie attempting to climb out of the convertible carrying the president, and Texas governor John Connally and his wife. A member of the Secret Service jumped on to the car to shield them. Jackie had cradled JFK's head, and his blood stained the suit. As the events of the day unfolded, Jackie continued wearing the suit, to the hospital, and on Air Force One leaving Dallas with the president's body. It was aboard Air Force One that Lyndon Baines Johnson was sworn in as president, and in another iconic photograph, Jackie is standing next to him at the swearing in, still in the blood stained pink Chanel suit. Where is the suit now? It is in the hands of the National Archives and Records Administration in College Park, Maryland, stored in an unknown location, unfolded in an acid-free box, with instructions that it may not be displayed before the year 2103.

29. What is a Pink Lady?

From Quiz In the Pink

Answer: An alcoholic drink

This drink is made of gin and grenadine syrup, and may include other ingredients as well. Another alcoholic drink, known as a pink squirrel, is comprised of white creme de cacao, creme de noyaux and cream itself. A pink gin, another heady drink, is made with bitters and gin. I don't know what any of them taste like as alcohol and my stomach don't get along, but the one with cream sounds rather yummy.

30. What company awards a pink vehicle to its top directors/producers?

From Quiz In The Pink

Answer: Mary Kay

In 1968, Mary Kay purchased a Cadillac and had it custom painted to match a cosmetic colour "Mountain Laurel Pink Blush". Later she decided to reward her top sellers with pink Cadillacs. These days, in the US, the reward vehicles are leased, not given outright, and do not have to be pink. In other places in the world, they are still pink, but not necessarily Cadillacs ... for example, in Japan it's a pink Toyota, in Argentina it's a pink Ford, in the UK/Netherlands/Germany/Spain it's a pink Mercedes Benz. The cosmetic company Mary Kay Inc. was founded in 1963. Estimated annual revenue in 2008 was somewhere around $2 billion USD.
