Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Violin
The violin, also referred to as a fiddle, was created in the early 1500s. It is played by placing it on the collarbone and drawing a bow across the strings. While most commonly associated with Western classical music and diverse folk music traditions, the violin has also made its way into a wide array of musical genres.
2. Harp
Harps date back to at least 3500 BC. The harp is made of wood, but the strings can be made of many different materials, such as animal tendons, silk, plant fiber, and wire. In the 17th century, the harp was temporarily forbidden in Ireland because it was connected to Irish pride and resistance against the government in power.
3. Drum Kit
The drum is a member of the percussion family. It is played by hitting it with drumsticks or your hand or rubbing the drumsticks against the drum. Some types of drums include bass drums, bongos, electronic drums, drum Kits, and djembes. Some famous drummers include Keith Moon, Ringo Starr, and Phil Collins.
4. Saxophone
The saxophone, commonly known as the sax, is a musical instrument that belongs to the woodwind family. It's interesting to note that even though it's considered a woodwind instrument, it is actually made of brass. In the 1840s, Adolphe Sax invented and patented the saxophone. Notably, former US President Bill Clinton is a skilled saxophone player.
5. Tambourine
Originally designed for religious reasons, the tambourine has found widespread use across various musical genres. Constructed from wood or plastic and fitted with pairs of metallic jingles known as zills, tambourines also include a headless version that lacks a drumhead. Mozart incorporated the tambourine into his compositions.
6. Accordion
German inventor Friedrich Buschmann is credited with creating the accordion in the early 1800s. This instrument comes in two primary types: the piano accordion, which features a keyboard on one side and buttons on the other, and the button accordion, which is equipped with buttons on both sides. Handmade craftsmanship is the standard for the majority of accordions, with only a limited production using automated machinery.
7. Electric Guitar
In the early 1930s, George Beauchamp and Adolph Rickenbacker created the first electric guitar. Electric guitars require amplification to produce sound, unlike acoustic guitars. Most electric guitars have six strings, but some guitars have more. Some famous electric guitar players are Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, and Keith Richards.
8. Grand Piano
Bartolomeo Cristofori was the first person to create the piano in the 1700s. The grand piano is the largest type of piano made, with 88 keys, 36 black keys, and 52 white keys. It is constructed from approximately 12,000 distinct components. Some famous pianists include Billy Joel, Elton John, and Jerry Lee Lewis.
9. Harmonica
The harmonica comes in two main types: the chromatic harmonica, which is capable of playing all the notes in the chromatic scale and is more complex, and the diatonic harmonica, which is easier and is often suggested for beginners due to its ease of play.
The instrument is played by directing airflow through one or more holes using the mouth, lips, and tongue. In 1965, the harmonica made history as one of the first instruments to be played in space. Some famous harmonica players include John Lennon, Neil Young, and Billy Joel.
10. Glockenspiel
The glockenspiel originated in Germany. The length of the metal glockenspiel bars determines the pitch, with shorter bars producing higher notes and longer bars producing lower notes. The glockenspiel and xylophone are similar, but the glockenspiel uses metal bars, and the xylophone uses wooden bars.
The original form of the glockenspiel featured small bells, which were later replaced by metal plates during the 17th century.
