Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
"Monday's Child" is a very old rhyme that predicts (tells the future about something) the personality or characteristics of children according to which day of the week they were born. Of course, we know that people are different and have different traits and qualities no matter which day they were born. The poem was a fun way to remember the proper order of the days of the week.
At one time the poem was passed down from one generation to another through the spoken word, meaning a Mom or Dad would recite the verse to a child and when that child grew up he or she would tell his or her own children. In 1838 the poem was published in a book called "A.E. Bray's Traditions of Devonshire". Anna Elizabeth Bray was an English writer (born in 1790) of historical and fiction books, often writing about families and life in Devon and Cornwall in England.
"Fair of face" means pretty or pleasant to look at. Someone who is "full of grace" has good manners, is polite and considerate.
In this poem "woe" means gloom or sadness. This doesn't mean that everyone born a Wednesday is going to be sad all the time. Sometimes we're bound to be happier than other times. We all have good days and bad!
"Far to go" or "will go far" means a person will be successful and accomplish much.
"Loving and giving" means exactly that--someone who is kind, pleasant and easygoing. That's simple enough!
To "work hard for living" could mean to put great effort into your job. If a person is "hard-working" they're dedicated and diligent.
A Sabbath day is a day put aside to pray and worship God. It could be a Sunday, Saturday or Friday (depending on your religious or cultural tradition), but in this poem it means Sunday. "Bonny and blithe" is an old-fashioned way of saying beautiful and joyful.
