Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

"The Months", which is sometimes called "The Months of the Year", is an old and popular children's poem from England. It was written by Sara Coleridge, and first published in "Pretty Lessons in Verse for Good Children" in 1839.

Every month brings different weather, as the poem tells us! In the Northern hemisphere, the seasons happen just as the poems says: winter is usually strong in January and February, but by March and April spring has come. May and June are warm, but it gets really hot in July and August! By the time September begins, the weather has usually started to cool again. In October we see the leaves changing color and falling, and it slowly gets colder and colder from November to December. By that time it is winter again, and the seasons (and the poem!) start from the beginning.

In the Southern hemisphere, though, things are a little different! There, in countries such as Australia and New Zealand, it is warmer between December and February than it is between June and September. This is because of the way the Earth tilts as the Sun is shining on it. Between around June to September, the Sun shines for longer on the Northern hemisphere. This heats it up, making it warm, summery weather. Meanwhile, the Southern hemisphere has shorter days, making it cooler. Then slowly, the days get longer in the Southern hemisphere, making it summery there, while it gets wintry in the Northern hemisphere!

Places near the Equator, where the days are pretty much the same length all year round, don't have distinct seasons like these ones from temperate climates.
