Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Kermit

Answer: Green

Kermit the Frog is one of the Muppet characters created by Jim Henson. Many frogs are green, and Kermit is no exception with a bright green body and red inside his mouth. Kermit is pursued regularly by Miss Piggy, who is in love with him.

Kermit is so popular he even has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
2. Spinach

Answer: Green

Spinach is a green vegetable and the leaves are eaten. It is believed to have first grown in Persia (now called Iran) but is recorded as being found in the Mediterranean area by the tenth century and in England and France by the fourteenth century.

Spinach is known for providing several vitamins, but its effects aren't quite as dramatic on humans as they are on Popeye in the cartoons.
3. Lime

Answer: Green

Lime is a small, round, green fruit which has a sharp taste so is usually sweetened for use in drinks and puddings. Key lime pie is particularly popular in Florida. Lime is a citrus fruit so contains vitamin C. Although limes are quite sour, they are sweeter than lemons.
4. Wild budgerigar

Answer: Green

Although we are used to seeing various colours of caged budgerigars, those found in the wild have green feathers with yellow heads and black and white wings. These small members of the parrot family are also known as parakeets.

In the wild, budgerigars are found in Australia.
5. Elmo

Answer: Red

Elmo is another of the Muppets, with shaggy red fur, who is described as a monster. He wasn't one of the original characters, appearing for the first time only in 1980, but soon proved popular and became one of the permanent members of the show.

Elmo is known for referring to himself by his own name, saying things like 'Elmo wants a cookie' rather than 'I want a cookie'.
6. Beetroot

Answer: Red

Beetroot, usually just called beet in America, is a vegetable where we usually eat the root part of the plant, which grows underground. The root grows into a round shape which can then be cooked to use as a vegetable or pickled to go with hamburgers. In Eastern Europe beetroots are used in a soup called borscht, which is a bright red colour.

The leaves can also be used and cooked as a vegetable, but the root is red, not green.
7. Cherry

Answer: Red

Cherries grow on trees which belong to the prunus family. This includes other fruit trees such as plums, peaches and apricots. The fruit of the cherry tree is called a drupe, which means it has a single hard stone in the middle and is surrounded by the fleshy fruit.

Most cherries are red, although there are some black varieties, and are grown around the world apart from in much of Africa, which has a climate which is too hot for them.
8. Northern cardinal

Answer: Red

The northern cardinal is a small bird known for the bright red colour found in the males. Females, as is common in bird species, tend to be duller and have brown feathers. The northern cardinal is found in the eastern parts of the USA and into the southern areas of Canada. Despite its name, it lives as far south as Mexico.
9. Fozzie Bear

Answer: Orange

Fozzie Bear is very close friends with Kermit, and is a Muppet who tries hard to be a comedian. He doesn't have much self confidence, though, and is often made fun of by other Muppet characters.

Fozzie has orange fur and always wears a brown hat and a pink and white neck scarf. His catchphrase is 'wocka, wocka'.
10. Carrot

Answer: Orange

The carrot is an orange vegetable which grows underground. Normally, all you see when they are growing is the feathery green leaves which tell you the plants are carrots. Edible plants which grow in this way are called 'root vegetables' as it is the root part that we eat, usually. Some people do eat the leaves as well.
11. Tangerine

Answer: Orange

The tangerine is a small type of orange which gets its name from Tangier, a port in Morocco. Tangerines are citrus fruits, so are a good way to consume vitamin C. They tend to be sweeter than oranges, too, and are much easier to peel.
12. Oriole

Answer: Orange

Orioles are birds which belong to the blackbird family, but they are much more colourful with many species having bright orange feathers. These colourful feathers cover their bodies with their wings and tails being mainly black and white.

These birds are found across North America and, depending on the species, in Mexico, Central America and on some Caribbean islands.
