Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Robert got up very early one morning and went for a walk in the bush near his home. The first thing he saw was WALITJ soaring high in the sky. What animal did he see?

Answer: Wedge tailed eagle

The wedge tailed eagle is a beautiful bird. The emu, horse and kangaroo do not fly!
2. Robert walked on, and noticed a KOOMAL, sitting half asleep on the branch of a tree, holding to the branch with its tail.

Answer: Possum

Possums are nocturnal (they are awake at night) and sleep in a hole in a tree during the day.
3. It was a warm summer morning, and Robert knew he must keep a watch for NORN, who might be curled up in the grass, enjoying the sun. What animals must he watch out for?

Answer: Snakes

Many snakes in Western Australia are very poisonous, so children in the bush learn to watch out for them in Spring and Summer.
4. As Robert walked further, he heard the sound of a large animal bounding through the bush, and he knew it was a YONGER. Which of these animals did he hear?

Answer: Kangaroo

Of the animals mentioned, only the kangaroo could be said to bound! The word YONGER is specific to the male grey kangaroo.
5. On his walk, Robert also saw many other birds. A small black and white bird, known to Noongars as DJITI-DJITI, has the reputation of being mischievious and calling children away from home. Which of these birds is it?

Answer: Willy Wagtail

Noongars view willy wagtails as troublemakers, leading children to follow them into the bush and become lost. Another belief is that the birds are messengers, or spirits of family members who are watching over you.
6. Robert also saw many trees on his walk. One tree, MUNGART, is known to be a very hard wood, and in English, has a name like something you might spread on your toast. What is it?

Answer: Jam Tree

Jam trees are a species of acacia and have bright yellow flowers in Spring. In the early days of European settlement in Western Australia, farmers used "jam posts" for fences, as the wood was resistant to white ants. The tree gained its English name from the smell of the freshly cut wood.
7. Robert heard something hurrying through the bush away from him. He looked hard, and soon saw a KARDAR. A KARDAR is a reptile that can run very fast. What do you think its English name might be?

Answer: Racehorse goanna

There is a story that if a racehorse goanna runs towards you, you must keep moving, as, if you stand still, the goanna will think you are a tree and run up your body. Their claws are quite scratchy, so that would not be a pleasant experience.
8. Then Robert saw a tall bird with long legs walking ahead of him. He knew the bird's name was WAITJ, and that it was the second tallest bird in the world. What is its English name?

Answer: Emu

The emu cannot fly, but runs very fast (up to 50 km per hour).
9. Now Robert crosses a small creek. In the water he sees GILGIES! What he is seeing is a smallish freshwater crustacean.

Answer: True

GLIGIES, KOONAKS and MARRON are all types of freshwater crustaceans, similar to prawns and lobster. They taste really good, especially when cooked in a billy on a campfire.
10. Robert looked up into the sky and saw that NGANGK had risen high in the sky and he knew it was time to go home for breakfast. What did he see in the sky?

Answer: Sun

The Noongar people have words for sun when it is rising (Ngangk yira) and for when it is setting (Ngangk wirdiny).
