1. Mosquito

Those pesky mosquitos had their name taken from the Spanish word "mosca" meaning pest and the Spanish word "ito" meaning small. So the name mosquito does well to describe a small pest that wants to suck your blood.
2. Fiesta

The Spanish word for party is fiesta. You can see the root word "festive" in the title as the word is also linked to a Latin word meaning fun and joyful, as most parties tend to be!
3. California

It's fitting that the name California comes a Spanish word as it is a U.S. state bordering Mexico, which was originally part of Mexico. In both languages it's called California. Some say the word was first written in a Spanish romance novel in 1510; others say it came from an Old Spanish phrase "Calit Fornay", which meant "hot furnace".
4. Guacamole

Guacamole is a staple in many Mexican dishes and it's fitting that the word is the same in both English and Spanish. Some of the first avocados were discovered in Mexico and guacamole comes from avocados.
5. Emoji

Our word for those cute icons you use on your phone is called emoji in both English and Japanese. In Japanese, it can be broken down into "e" (meaning picture) and "moji" (meaning character).
6. Ninja

Probably the easiest one of the quiz, ninja describes a sneaky type of warrior first found in Japan. But in English, they still use the same word. You might remember the cartoon movie "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles"?
7. Sudoko

Sudoko is a common puzzle that people like to play by trying to put all the numbers in the correct order on a grid. Its name comes from the Japanese word that means "the numbers must remain single" - you have to make each number appear only once in each small box, in each horizontal row, and in each vertical column.

Karaoke is very popular in Japan (and other parts of the world). People do their best to sing the lyrics of their favorite songs as the music plays and words scroll on a screen. Karaoke is a Japanese word, but in English we kept the same word.
9. Restaurant

Some of the best restaurants in the world are in France and it's fitting that, whether you're speaking English or French, it's still called restaurant. The word originated in France in the 18th Century and didn't mean a building at first, it actually referred to a meat broth before its common use today.
10. Ballet

The beautiful dance form ballet originated in Italy, but the word came from the French in the 17th Century. When it was translated into English, they kept the same spelling and pronunciation. Many ballet terms like plie are also taken from French words.
11. Chef

If you want to thank the cook at the restaurant, you'd call them "chef" whether you're speaking French or English. The French term "chef de cuisine" is used in both languages when referring to the head of the kitchen.
12. Chic

If you're dressed using the latest fashion, people say you're being chic. The original word comes from the French where it means "stylish or smart". The French word is fun to say, and English speakers just adopted the same word and pronunciation.
