Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Some people drive their cars to work every day. Which of these choices would be the cleanest for the environment?

Answer: Bicycle

Since each gallon of gas that a car burns produces 20 pounds of carbon dioxide, driving yourself is not the best way to help the environment. Carpools and public transport reduce the amount of gas burnt and the carbon dioxide emitted for each person. The only power needed for a bicycle is the effort of the person riding.
2. You have a "green" gift for your friend's birthday. Which would be the worst wrapping material to use?

Answer: A new roll of commercial gift wrap

You should always try to use materials that are being reused, could be reused, or could be recycled. Try to keep new materials out of the cycle, by being creative with wrapping choices.
3. You have taken your dog to the park for a walk; what do you do about his no. 2 body function waste?

Answer: Pick it up with a biodegradable bag

You don't want to leave it, that would ruin the park experience for others. The best thing to use is the doggie poo bio bag.
4. Compact fluorescent bulbs, the swirly ones, are more energy efficient than incandescent bulbs.

Answer: True

Compact fluorescent bulbs use 60-80% less energy than an incandescent bulb.
CFBs do contain small amounts of mercury making disposal a concern, but most stores that sell them also recycle. If you should break a fluorescent bulb, don't touch anything, get an adult to help you.
5. The three R's of recycling are Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Which is the first priority?

Answer: Reduce

Reducing what we consume should always be our number one priority. It takes less energy to reuse an item, instead of going through all the energy eating steps to make a new item. Finally, after we have used the item to its fullest, it should head to the recycle bin. We should also buy recycled items; this supports reducing the use of new materials.
6. Which would be the most energy or water efficient method for using the dishwasher?

Answer: Air dry the load, instead of running through the complete cycle

A full load will cut down on the number of loads you will run. No need to use the water for a pre-rinse, with the more modern machines. If you open the door after the wash and rinse cycle, you will be saving energy by not drying the dishes with electrical means. Believe it or not, you would use less water with the dishwasher as opposed to washing by hand, as long as you don't pre-rinse.
7. How could you reduce the amount of water that goes down the drain in your bathroom?

Answer: All of these

Low Flow Systems automatically use less water. If you brush your teeth twice a day and turn the water off while you do it, you could save up to 6 gallons of water every day.
8. What is vampire power?

Answer: Energy used by devices when they are plugged in but not turned on.

Devices that are not being used should be unplugged. Gadgets that are charged should have the charger unplugged, as well. Try a smart power strip, which turns off the power supply to devices that don't need it.
9. When you are at the grocery store, which bag would be better for the environment?

Answer: Reusable bag

The debate of "paper versus plastic" will go on, with each side having pros and cons. The simplest way to avoid the controversy and to help the environment is to use your own reusable bag.
10. One water bottle thrown away takes up space in landfill and can take hundreds of years to decompose. What would be a way to save space in landfill?

Answer: All of these

If you drink bottled water make sure to recycle the bottle, don't just throw it in the trash. If you decide that you don't need bottled water, try filtered tap water. Use a reusable bottle, or one of the awesome stainless steel bottles. Plastics that are recyclable receive a stamped number when its made, usually the choices are 1 through 7. Your parents can help you determine which plastics are recyclable in your area.
