Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Angel Falls
The tallest waterfall in the world, Angel Falls is nearly a kilometre high! Found in Venezuela in the north of South America, it's actually quite difficult to visit because it's so far away from most cities. You'd need to fly to the rainforest, then hike through Canaima National Park to see it.
It's said that the falls were found by explorers when they were looking for the Lost City of Gold, El Dorado.
2. Chile
Stretching more than four thousand kilometres down the west coast of South America, Chile is sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes Mountains. The southern tip of Chile is so far south that it's the closest location to Antarctica in the world, and it's so far from the northern end of Chile-- Los Angeles and New York City are closer together! The capital city of Chile is Santiago.
3. Lake Titicaca
The largest lake in South America and the highest lake you can visit on the globe, Lake Titicaca is nestled between Bolivia and Peru. Found in the Andes Mountains, the main cities to visit here are Copacabana, Bolivia and Puno, Peru. Despite the lake not being all too close to the historical settlements of both countries, it has long been the home of the Uru people who resided there on floating islands.
4. Machu Picchu
Constructed more than five hundred years ago in the high peaks of the Peruvian Andes, the Lost City of Machu Picchu was formerly the home of the Incan Empire. Today, visitors can make the trek to the ruins here, taking the long walk up or riding the bus to the top. Voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, it might be one of the most famous spots in South America altogether.
5. Tierra del Fuego
A series of islands known as an archipelago, Tierra del Fuego is found at the southern tip of South America and its name translates to 'Land of Fire'. Until the Panama Canal was opened, people sailing around the continent needed to pass around this dangerous point to reach the other side of South America. Nowadays it's the point to visit for anyone travelling to Antarctica by boat.
6. The Galapagos
Where Charles Darwin famously arrived on the HMS Beagle in 1830s, the Galápagos Islands are found off the coast of Ecuador in the northwest of South America. Home to the Galápagos Tortoise, there are more than one hundred twenty islands in this chain, many of which are protected reserves for unique animal life that can't be found anywhere else in the world.
7. Iguacu Falls
The beautiful Iguacu Falls are found on the border between Argentina and Brazil (and are only a short drive from Paraguay) and are considered, by some, to be amongst the most beautiful waterfalls in the world. Borne from the Iguazu River, it's the sixth strongest waterfall in the world by water flow, just a bit less than Niagara Falls.
Another difference is that this set of falls is found in the middle of protected rainforest.
8. Colombia
The nation of Colombia is found up in the northwest corner of the continent and it connects to Central America, sharing its narrow border with Panama. A vibrant nation of mountains, rainforests, deserts, and beautiful coasts, its varied cities are sights to behold. Its capital, Bogotá, is one of the largest cities in the world.
9. Amazon Rainforest
The largest rainforest in the world, the Amazon covers five and a half million square kilometres of space in nine countries of South America. Home to the largest number of unique animals and plants on the planet, it's also home to numerous tribes of indigenous people, many of whom live so deep in the forest that interaction with anyone else is rare. Because of the importance of the rainforest's trees in creating oxygen and filtering carbon dioxide, the Amazon is sometimes called 'the lungs of the Earth'.
10. Christ the Redeemer
El Cristo Redentor, as he is known, stands atop Corcovado Mountain as it overlooks the coastal Brazilian city (and former capital) of Rio de Janeiro. One of the most recognizable statues in the world, it's a thirty-metre-high figure of Jesus Christ with his arms outstretched. One of the New Seven Wonders of the World, it's perhaps the definitive landmark of Brazil, South America's largest country.
