Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which 80s/90s sitcom, starring Candice Bergen, featured the characters Corky, Murphy, Miles, Frank, and Jim?

Answer: Murphy Brown

Murphy Brown aired from 1988 to 1998. It was about a reporter (played by Candice Bergen) working at a news station for a magazine show called 'FYI'. She was also a recovering alcoholic. Corky Sherwood (Faith Ford) was a reporter hired to replace Murphy while she was in rehab. Miles Silverberg (Grant Shaud) was the executive producer for 'FYI'. Frank Fontana (Joe Regalbuto) was a reporter who was also Murphy's best friend, and Jim Dial (Charles Kimbrough) was a veteran news anchor.
2. What was the surname of the doctor, or 'medicine woman', played by Jane Seymour in the '90s series of the same name?

Answer: Quinn

'Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman' was a series set in the Wild West about a female doctor (rare in those times) raising a family. It ran from 1993 to 1998 and starred Jane Seymour of 'James Bond' fame as the titular doctor, Michaela Quinn, who leaves her wealthy Boston background for a small town in Colorado.

She ends up adopting three children after their mother is bitten by a rattlesnake. Joe Lando also featured as Byron Sully, an outdoorsman and Dr. Quinn's love interest.
3. Which pair of cities are both located in Florida? (Hint: don't go looking for actors or signs, or you'll be disappointed.)

Answer: Fort Myers and Hollywood

Yes, there is a Hollywood in Florida! It is a suburb of the Miami Metropolitan Area. Fort Myers is the home of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford's winter homes, Seminole Lodge and The Mangoes, and is named after a fort built during the Seminole Wars.

Miami is Florida's most populous city next to Jacksonville, and has a large Cuban population. It is a popular holiday destination. Round Rock is in Texas and is the home of the computer company Dell.

Tallahassee is in Florida and is the state capital. Athens is in Georgia; it is the home town of REM and the University of Georgia, and is a satellite of the state capital of Atlanta.

There are two Jacksonvilles, one in Florida and one in North Carolina; Jacksonville is the venue for the college football fixture between Georgia Bulldogs and Florida Gators, and is also the home of bands Yellowcard and Limp Bizkit. The port city of Wilmington is also in North Carolina.
4. Which card game features two teams of two players bidding on tricks with a trump suit?

Answer: Spades

Spades is a variation of Whist, but unlike other games with trump cards, the trump suit in Spades is always the suit of spades. The object of the game is for each team or player to bid on how many hands (tricks) they will win. If they get under their bid, they lose points. If they get over their bid, they gain 'bags' (which is not necessarily good, as you can lose points if you accumulate too many bags).

The winner is the first to reach 500 points, or cause the other team/player to lose -200 points.
5. Which Wayans brother was NOT associated with 'Scary Movie' (specifically, the first film in the series)?

Answer: Damon

Shawn and Marlon both co-wrote and starred in the movie. Marlon played a parody of Randy Meeks from 'Scream', while Shawn played Ray Wilkins, a parody of Stu Macher from 'Scream' and Phil Stevens from 'Scream 2'. Keenan directed the movie. There's a bit of self-referencing in the movie when Ray kills Bobby Prinze (a parody of Billy Loomis from 'Scream', and named after Freddie Prinze Jr., who appeared in 'I Know What You Did Last Summer') because his favourite programme, 'The Wayans Brothers', has been cancelled.

Damon appeared in 'I'm Gonna Git You Sucka', a blaxploitation parody which Keenan also directed and starred in. Their sisters Nadia and Kimberly also featured.
6. Who played Ben Cartwright, owner of the Ponderosa Ranch, on 'Bonanza'?

Answer: Lorne Greene

Greene played Ben, the thrice-widowed patriarch of the Cartwright family. The other three answers played his sons, all of whom had different mothers. Roberts played Adam, an architectural engineer and the oldest; Blocker played Eric, the middle brother, a gentle giant nicknamed 'Hoss'; and Landon, also known for playing Pa Ingalls in 'Little House on the Prairie', played Joseph, the youngest. Adam was of English descent, Hoss's mother was Swedish and Joseph's mother was French Creole. They lived with Hop Sing (Victor Sen Young), a Chinese cook.

All three of Ben's wives had died, and the other men had similar bad luck with women, to the point where TV Tropes named a trope after it, 'The Cartwright Curse', referring to a character who has repeated bad luck with partners (usually involving them dying).
7. If you are frantically looking for something but are on the wrong track, what are you on, according to a certain idiom?

Answer: A wild goose chase

A 'wild goose chase' is essentially a hopeless search, a fool's errand. The object of the search is either somewhere else, or does not exist. The saying is thought to have originated from the world of horse racing in the 16th century, when racers had to follow the erratic course of the leading horse, just as geese follow their leader while flying in formation. William Shakespeare used it in Act 2, Scene 4 of 'Romeo & Juliet', where Romeo's comic relief friend Mercutio says, "Nay, if our wits run the wild-goose chase, I am done; for thou hast more of the wild goose in one of thy wits than, I am sure, I have in my whole five."
8. Which London football team play at Selhurst Park, wear red and blue stripes, and are nicknamed the Eagles? (Sailor Moon would no doubt be a fan.)

Answer: Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace were formed in 1905 and were named after the Crystal Palace that was built in Hyde Park for the Great Exhibition of 1851. Their nicknames are the Eagles and the Glaziers (fittingly, one player, Alan Pardew - who later managed the club - was an actual glazier), and even had a bald eagle mascot called Kayla at one stage. Their main rivals are Brighton and Hove Albion, despite said club being based in Sussex and not London, a rivalry that was exacerbated by tensions at fixtures between the clubs in the 1970s.

(In 'Sailor Moon', the titular character's future self, Neo-Queen Serenity, lives in the Crystal Palace on the moon.)
9. Which character did Arnold Schwarzenegger play in 'Total Recall'?

Answer: Douglas Quaid

'Total Recall' is based on the short story 'We Can Remember It for You Wholesale' by Philip K. Dick. Schwarzenegger played dual roles as Douglas Quaid and Carl Hauser. Hauser gets his memory erased by Vilos Cohaagen, the dictator of a Martian colony, after falling in love and defecting, and gets turned into Quaid, a construction worker. Quaid has no memory of his life as Hauser until he sees a video recording of himself before his memory was erased, telling Quaid to stop Cohaagen.

As for the other characters, they're all Schwarzenegger characters. John Kimble was the titular 'Kindergarten Cop'; Howard Langston was in 'Jingle All the Way', a put-upon father searching for an action figure; and Julius Benedict was one of the 'Twins', the other being Vincent Benedict (Danny DeVito).
10. What is the common bond between the first nine answers?

Answer: Saturday Night Live

'Saturday Night Live' is a comedy sketch series that has been running since 1975. It has spawned many comedic superstars, including the clues to this quiz. As follows:
1. Stand-up comedian Eddie MURPHY appeared on the show in the early '80s. His characters included parodies of Mr Rogers and Buckwheat from 'Little Rascals'.
2. Colin QUINN was a cast member and writer for 'Saturday Night Live' from 1995 to 2000 and one of the hosts of 'Weekend Update', a satirical news show section.
3. Canadian comedian Mike MYERS is known for starring in the 'Austin Powers' and 'Wayne's World' films; 'Wayne's World' originated from a sketch on 'Saturday Night Live', which also featured Dana Carvey.
4. David SPADE appeared on 'Saturday Night Live' from 1990 to 1996. Originally a writer, he later joined the cast; his characters included a rude flight attendant in 'Total [Censored] Airlines' and a celebrity reporter who made fun of celebrities in 'Hollywood Minute'.
5. Damon WAYANS appeared on 'Saturday Night Live' from 1985 to 1986, but only lasted eleven episodes. He was fired for improvising during a live sketch, in which he was supposed to be playing a straight policeman, but played a flamboyantly gay one instead. Wayans later stated that he wanted to be fired.
6. LORNE Michaels was the original creator and producer of 'Saturday Night Live'. He has been nominated for over 90 Emmy Awards, making him a record holder for the most Emmy nominations.
7. Chevy CHASE appeared in the first season of 'Saturday Night Live', from 1975 to 1976, and was the original host of 'Weekend Update'. His catchphrase introduction was "I'm Chevy Chase...and you're not." Although he was only contracted for one season, he won two Emmys and a Golden Globe for his writing and acting.
8. Billy CRYSTAL hosted 'Saturday Night Live' a couple of times in 1984 and joined the regular cast later that year. His most notable character was a talk show host based on Argentinian actor Fernando Lamas, whose catchphrase was 'you look...mahvellous!'
9. Randy QUAID, of 'The Last Detail' and 'Midnight Express' fame, had a brief stint on 'Saturday Night Live' from 1985 to 1986.
