French Language Trivia Questions

1. To find the correct French number, you need to know the value of a loonie plus the value of a toonie.

From Quiz
French Numbers with a Canadian Twist

Answer: Trois

A loonie is worth one dollar and a toonie is worth two dollars so the answer to this is three, translated to French making the answer trois. The loonie and toonie are both coins, replacing the one dollar and two dollar bills. The loonie was introduced in 1987 and the toonie was introduced in 1996. A loonie was placed at centre ice at the E Center Arena in Salt Lake City before the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympics. This is the arena where the hockey games took place during the Olympics and both the Canadian women's and men's teams went on to win Gold medals. As a result the "lucky loonie" has become part of Canadian folklore and the Royal Canadian Mint has released a commemorative "lucky loonie" for each Winter Olympics since then.

2. What is the correct plural form of the French word "Monsieur"?

From Quiz What's the Right Plural Form?

Answer: Messieurs

Other irregular plurals include "aïeul" (ancestor) - "aïeux"; "bonhomme" (fellow) - "bonshommes"; "ciel" (sky) - "cieux"; "oeil" (eye) - "yeux"; "Madame" (Mrs) - "Mesdames"; "Mademoiselle" (Miss) - "Mesdemoiselles".

3. Whether you're going out to a fine restaurant for dinner or to the drive-through at a fast food place, you may see sandwiches or meat 'au jus'. What does 'au jus' mean?

From Quiz It's A Baguette!

Answer: with juice

'Au jus' are French words that mean 'with juice'. Some places serve meat (usually beef) with a small container of sauce or gravy for you to dip your sandwich or meat in. The 'au jus' is the natural juices from cooking the meat or can be made from dry packaged ingredients or canned broth or very thin gravy.

4. A 'cochon' and a 'flamant' can both be what colour in French?

From Quiz Jeff's French Colours

Answer: Rose

The French 'cochon' and 'flamant' translate to 'pig' and 'flamingo', which are both pink - or "rose" in French.

5. To which type of people did the word "bourgeoisie" originally refer?

From Quiz Pardon My French

Answer: Shopkeepers, Merchants and Traders

This was during the feudal period of the middle ages. Today, however, when the term is applied to anyone, it's considered more of an insult and is used against someone considered to have middle-class values and attitudes.

6. "Bienvenu" in French is a greeting. What would be the translation? (Don't forget we are looking for a literal translation in this quiz.)

From Quiz How do you say that in English?

Answer: Welcome

I highly doubt if 'woohoo' or 'howdy' existed when this word was first being used. In Italian, benvenuto; in German, Willkommen; in Hebrew, Baruch Habba, etc. There is a great song from the movie Cabaret - "Wilkommen, Bienvenu, Welcome...la-di-da"

7. Can you find the English equivalent of this French sentence? "Mais, que fait donc cet éléphant au milieu du salon?"

From Quiz Absurd French 1007

Answer: But, what is that elephant doing in the middle of the living room?

"Donc" is a word that's interjected throughout sentences and which is probably best translated as "therefore: but not used in that way very often. If you see it in this sentence, "je pense donc je suis" you've got the Thinker's famous sentence..."I think therefore I am." But if you hear, "mais qu'est-ce que tu bois Doudou dis donc?" then don't bother with the donc! Beauty salon might be 'salon de coiffure' or a few other terms that are used throughout France. The Salon that I refer to in the false sentences is the literary gathering in the late nineteenth century where authors and others got together and discussed literature or the annual painting exhibition in Paris.

8. What would you be telling your neighbor in this handy sentence? Je vous demande pardon, mais vos oisons sont en train de déraciner mes pétunias. Si cela continue, ils aboutiront dans le foie gras!

From Quiz Absurd French 1002

Answer: I beg your pardon, but your goslings are digging up my petunias. If this keeps up, they'll end up in the goose liver pâté!

Par où commencer? First of all, les oisons are 'goslings'. As you will see in this quiz, I'm using some of the animal baby names that are slightly different from the adult animal. Déraciner is to uproot or pull up by the roots. If someone is 'déraciné' the meaning is clear, uprooted. For our French students, you have perhaps recognized the use of 'etre en train de' or to be doing something. This is the way you indicate the real process of doing something, otherwise, you can always use the present tense which means, 'to do' in general, as well as 'to be doing'. Aboutir is to end up. 'Bout' means end. Le foie gras is the legendary dish of stuffed goose livers. Actually the goslings would not be put into it, as it requires mature geese. It is produced in the Southwest regions of France known for its poultry. The French prize foie gras and indulge in it at holiday meals with excellent wine and reverence for its rich taste.

9. What is the English equivalent of this sentence? Non, non et non! ! Tu as beau être un gorille de cent kilos, mais nous ne servons pas le dîner avant sept heures et demie au plus tôt !!

From Quiz Absurd French 594

Answer: No, no, no! You may be a one hundred kilo gorilla, but we don't serve dinner till seven thirty at the earliest!

'Tu as beau' plus infinitive is a way of saying, you might very well have...You might very well be. Therefore, if you say, 'Tu as beau lui dire non, il veut toujours sortir', No matter if you tell him no, he still wants to go out.' Here's an online translation of it for your amusement: "You have beautiful being a gorilla of one hundred kilos, but we do not serve the dinner before seven hours and half as soon as possible!"

10. Ils veulent que nous __________________________ ici.

From Quiz Subjunctive or Indicative?

Answer: restions

In French, 'vouloir' means to want and since it is a wish, it is followed by the subjunctive.

11. Si les acheteurs de tableaux de Marcel de Simiane savaient qu'il était chimpanzé en réalité, ils seraient outrés.

From Quiz Absurd French 771

Answer: If the purchasers of paintings by Marcel de Simiane knew he was a really a chimpanzee, they'd be appalled.

Un tableau = painting. Chimpanzé is chimpanzee of course. Outré means shocked, appalled.

12. Armand, attention derrière toi, il y a un nounours qui attaque !

From Quiz Absurd French 978

Answer: Armand, watch out behind you, there's a teddy bear attacking!

Un nounours is a teddy bear. A nursemaid or babysitter is often called the nounou for short for nourrice. Originally that was used for a wet-nurse, then when that profession went out of style with bottle feeding, the name was used for the childcare person. Un ours is a bear, and un ours grizzly is a grizzly bear.

13. L'athlète tient le ______ olympique, pour la fête du village ils font une retraite aux ________x dans la rue.

From Quiz Huitième jeu de mots

Answer: flambeau

"Le flambeau" means torch and is also used for village processions with torches or candles, or for safety's sake, lamps with candles in them. I've seen a few flare up however but kids love these things often held on the Fourteenth of July fourteenth. In 2003 a religious procession unfortunately had some burn victims therefore perhaps the use of live flames will be curtailed in some areas.

14. What is the correct ending for 'I play'? (jouer)

From Quiz Present Tense Verbs

Answer: joue

Present tense of 'jouer': Je joue, tu joues, il/elle/on joue, nous jouons, vous jouez, ils/elles jouent.

15. The Harry Potter books have been translated into many languages. What is the title of the first book, in the French translations?

From Quiz Bonjour Harry Potter

Answer: Harry Potter à l'école des Sorciers

It translates as "Harry Potter at Wizard School". Obviously, some of the characters' names have had to be changed, so that speakers of another language can manage to pronounce them, and so that the connotations surrounding certain names were preserved. Harry is still Harry though. The French editions were translated by Jean-François Ménard.

16. Il est au septième ______, ______mon mari!, lever les yeux vers le ______, elle a remué _____et terre pour accomplir la tache, le _____est clair.

From Quiz Septième Jeu de Mots

Answer: ciel

Septième ciel is seventh heaven, Ciel mon mari ! is an exclamation and this is an old joke and title of a book. If you lift your eyes to the heavens or sky, you're imploring a celestial intervention. If you move heaven and earth to get something done, you're really trying hard. By the way, the plural is cieux.

17. Avec tous les si, on mettrait Paris en ________ !, Il prend de la ________, Jolie ______sacrée _____ veux-tu me laisser tranquille?, une bonne _______

From Quiz Sixième Jeu de Mots

Answer: bouteille

"Avec tous les si" etc., is an expression to make someone stop making suppositions, the other expression that is slightly more earthy is: « si si si, si ma tante en avait, elle serait mon oncle». Prendre de la bouteille is to age, you may use it for a person though and it sometimes means experience. "Jolie bouteille sacrée bouteille" is a drinking song, the next verse is, "je veux te quitter, je veux m'en aller, je veux recommencer ma vie."

18. Battre de l'__________, la peur donne des ________s, voler de ses propres ________s, être sous l'______de quelqu'un, _______du moulin

From Quiz Cinquième Jeu de Mots

Answer: aile

Battre de l'aile means to flutter one's wings and fly away, if by extension something of yours is doing it, it's flying away. "Leur couple bat de l'aile" is the equivalent of "their marriage is on the rocks". Fear gives wings, fairly obvious. Voler de ses propres ailes is simply to fly with one's own wings. "Il est sous l'aile de son superviseur" means he's being taken care of by the supervisor, under his wings. L'aile du Moulin is the blade of a windmill or for other devices.

19. _______blanche, ________à puces, _______bancaire,_______de séjour, pan______,___de crédit

From Quiz Quatrième Jeu de Mots

Answer: carte

"Une carte à puces" is a smart card which requires a passcode. "Une carte bancaire", is closer to what Americans would call an ATM card, but which does not give you credit. It's a bit complicated and constantly evolving, yet most French people have the kind of card which instantly debits your account, and the other which gives you a credit. "La carte de séjour" is for foreign residents. "Une pancarte" is a poster or sign. "Donner carte blanche" means you may do as you like with all the resources you require.

20. Comment dit-on, "My name is Chris"?

From Quiz What's the Correct Answer

Answer: Je m'appelle Chris.

"Je m'appelle" means "my name is" so you would fill in the blank normally with your own name to introduce yourself.

21. Ménage à _________, jamais deux sans___________, un restaurant ______étoiles

From Quiz Deuxième Jeu de Mots

Answer: trois

'Le mènage à trois' is a typical feature of a French film, a woman with two love interests, or a husband with two love interests. 'Ménage' means household, housekeeping. 'Un restaurant trois étoiles' is a three star restaurant in the coveted Guide Michelin, unlike a three star hotel which isn't as good as a four star. There are very few of the former in France.

22. Les membres, le tronc et la tête.

From Quiz French Assembling

Answer: un corps humain

Translation: the limbs, the trunk and the head are parts of a human body.

23. Que veut dire "un hameau" en français? What does "un hameau" mean in French?

From Quiz Vive les H!

Answer: A tiny hamlet or village

Sometimes this word is used for a neighborhood that is attached to a city but it doesn't have the same status. A ham hock is "un jambonneau" whereas a roast ham, well, it isn't too popular. "Un hameçon" is a fish hook.

24. Le canard rose nage dans la mare à minuit avec la loutre.

From Quiz Absurd French 148

Answer: The pink duck swims in the pond at midnight with the otter.

La mare is the pond. The badger is "le blaireau". Les otaris or les phoques are seals. Nager is to swim of course, neiger is to snow. La mer is the sea. Noon is midi. This one makes a good code for a secret rendezvous.

25. Voilà ce qui arrive si vous mangez trop de bonbons!

From Quiz Mixed French

Answer: caries

If you eat too much candy you're gonna get caries!

26. Nous __________très heureux d'annoncer la naissance du bébé.

From Quiz Basic French Verb test

Answer: sommes

One slight point in modern spoken French is that you'll hear "on est" for the nous or we. You'll rarely hear the nous conjugated any more in spoken French amongst younger people. In written French you need to conjugate it properly. Another birth announcement might be, "Nous avons le grand plaisir de vous annoncer..."

27. Une grenouille, une feuille, une émeraude:

From Quiz French Colouring

A frog, a leaf and an emerald are green.
